If you had to buy one book on how to create value for your customers and have a better life and make more money, this is the book. 30 years in the making, Larry Kendall is the NINJA MASTER. He and his partners started The Group, Inc., in Fort Collins, Colorado and became one of the most successful real estate companies in America. The system that Larry teaches is priceless and appeals to all customers. Larry's book is not only for real estate agents but it is for all businesses that work with customers. I use the principles taught in my real estate firm, my real estate school and my real estate development firm and our sales have gone up over 50%. Larry is one of the best teachers I have ever met. The historian's huge work, written between 20 BC and AD 17, ran to 12 books, beginning with Rome's founding in 753 BC and coming down to Livy's own lifetime (9 BC). Just Some Comments on the Translation

Livy's history is fast-paced and colourful. T. J. Luce's notes are very helpful and his translation is very readable, but sometimes his word choices are so modern as to be jarring; for example, "iure gentium," "the law of nations," is anachronistically translated as "international law" in the first half of the book, although it then becomes "the law of nations" in the second half. Another jarring anachronism is "sadist" for "carnifex," a word that means "executioner" (2.35)--not the sexual cruelty named after the Marquis de Sade. And since there are so many Latin-English cognates that have a similar connotation I find it misleading when translators take such liberties. Here are some other examples:

"legum humanarum" becomes "civilized" (1.28, Luce) whereas the Loeb and S�lincourt have "laws of humanity." "inhumanumque" is translated as "barbaric" (1.48) instead of "inhuman." Since the concept of the human as a moral standard is a new one at that time (I'm thinking in particular of the idea of "humanitas"), it is essential to keep it in the text. If Livy had meant "barbaric" he could have used "barbari." To make matters worse, "saevi exempli" (savage example) is later translated as "inhuman example."

"sceleris tragici exemplum" is translated as "a tragic spectacle to rival those of Greece" (1.46). Luce's gloss of "to rival those of Greece" is helpful, but Foster's use of a footnote to make the gloss in the Loeb translation allows the translation itself to remain more literal.

In such cases, it's as if the translator is trying to "improve" upon Livy by using a different word from the one Livy used. But comparing it to the original, I think the more faithful translation is the more colorful and powerful one. Further, if you're really trying to enter into the thought of the original, or are using the translation for academic writing, then it is very helpful to have a translation that stays as close to the original as possible.

However, while the Loeb generally seems to be more faithful that is not always the case. For example, the Loeb awkwardly translates "iniuste impieque" (I.32) as "unduly and against religion" whereas Luce more fittingly has "unjustly and impiously."

For "puro pioque duello" (1.32), Luce has "a pure and pious war" (1.32, Luce) and Foster "warfare just and righteous."

For "iusta ac legitima" (1.48), Luce has "just and legitimate" and Foster "just and lawful."

Thus, sometimes Luce is admirably literal but other times his translations are rather loose.

Livy for Contemporary Readers

Professor Luce, an eminent Livian scholar, has rendered the first five books of Livy's "Ab Urbe Condita" in concise English that not only retains the essence of the Latin but also conveys the vividness of the narrative. In other words, he tells the tales of the founding of Rome in an entertaining manner that is accessible to today's students, who have little patience for long-winded or stilted prose.

The book includes an informative introduction, two maps, a brief chronology, and copious notes. My only quibble is with the index, which has been geared for scholars of Roman history. For example, a student looking up the dictator Cincinnatus must be aware that he is listed by the gens name of Quinctius (There is no cross-reference.); and then the student has to decide between Titus, Lucius, and Quintus. While this is good practice for the serious scholar of Roman history, it might be infuriating for the casual reader (One hopes that Oxford will correct this flaw in a future edition). Nevertheless, the book is so enjoyable that I recommend it highly and have adopted it for my Roman Civilization class.

Not what I was looking for.

The major drawback of this book from my standpoint is that all of the Phoenician samples have been transliterated into the Hebrew alphabet. I'm not sure whether this was the original intent of the author or was a later cost-saving measure on the part of the publisher. Thus there is a peculiar section on "The Alphabet" which in fact never presents a single Phoenician character. Aside from this problem, the treatment appears to be straightforward and thorough, although I didn't keep the book long enough to find out just how clear the explanations are. You might find this book of use if you are interested strictly in comparative linguistics, or perhaps travelling back in time and conversing with some Phoenicians. But for reading Phoenician inscriptions, it is of quite limited utility.

I'm very pleased with this book - my only disappointment is that the Hebrew alphabet, rather than the Phoenician, was used for the Phoenician vocabulary items, but this is not a major hurdle.

David's deception becomes the defining moment of the main characters' lives, and Phoebe's absence corrodes her birth family's core over the course of the next 25 years. David's undetected lie warps his marriage; he grapples with guilt; Norah mourns her lost child; and Paul not only deals with his parents' icy relationship but with his own yearnings for his sister as well. Though the impact of Phoebe's loss makes sense, Edwards's redundant handling of the trope robs it of credibility. This neatly structured story is a little too moist with compassion.

Save Your Money

I think it must just be me but I didn't like this book at all. Mostly, I didn't like either of the main characters. The husband gives away his Down syndrom newborn daughter without blinking an eye then tells his wife she died. The mother, even though she has the remaining twin who is strong and healthy cannot concentrate on the baby she does have but gets more and more depressed over the one she doesn't have. Both parents disgusted me almost to no end. The one bright spot was the Down syndrom child, raised by the husband's nurse (he is a doctor). I liked the nurse, her husband, and the little girl. Otherwise, I thought this book was long and boring. I was expecting so much more. I won't be recommending this book to my friends. The writing was first class. The story itself nearly bored me to death.

Good writing. Interesting premise. However, the ending struck me as contrived for a made for Hollywood movie. A writer to watch with a talent for some lovely prose and interesting characters.

A must read.

I loved this book. It is great for anyone thinking of living, or even just visiting the D.R. My wife is Dominincan and we are currently thinking about purchasing a vacation home their since we go back and forth sooooo much. This book gave me the insight as an expat and what I should expect. I feel well equipped now to begin the process. If you're just thinking about visiting, this book will help as well. You'll find this book has a little bit for everyone. I'm not big on reading, but I couldn't put this one down.

Expat Info for The Dominican Republic

This is a VERY INFORMATIVE book to have. The writers have so much info in here to help guide you through the process of moving and living in the Dominican Republic. We'll be visiting there again this year after 13yrs and we hope it's everything they say it is when we get there. If it is, we will probably move there and become permanent residents. I would highly recommend this book to anyone needing guidance on where to look for the help you may need as an expat to be! :)

Do not leave home without it

Before any aspiring ex-pat decides to make the move to a new country, or move for work, then most people will do as much research as they can so that they know what to expect and how they will make things happen once they get there.

I expected this latest book by Ginnie and Ilana to be similar to their previous books with descriptions as to life in the Dominican Republic, but to my surprise it was not that at all.

Yes, there are references to day to day life, in addition to some information on cultural aspects, but this is not a book which gives you a general idea about living in the Dominican Republic, and you read once, then put it on a shelf to gather dust. This is a book you read before you come here and then you make sure it is handy, because you will be checking it on a weekly basis for how to do something, where to find something, the laws about something else, and the way to solve the issues which arise on a daily basis.

Expat FAQ is not a light hearted yet revealing read about the Dominican Republic and its people. It is a veritable encyclopedia about how to actually function here. From how to obtain residency and a Dominican driving license, through to how to buy a house, arrange health insurance, how much things cost and a host of other useful information to enable the new arrival, and indeed the existing ex-pat, to make their lives a whole lot easier and smoother.

The book is intelligently divided into sections: Why, Where, What, Who and How, which make a perfect framework to answering all the potential questions a newly arrived ex-pat might have.

It is full of detail and not merely general topics. One of my favourite sections is the "Where" section, where the book describes each of the areas of the country, and gives information to help the new arrival decide where to live. Many people simply do not realize how large the Dominican Republic is, and the major differences there are between the different areas of the country. This section will enable the new arrival to make a much more informed choice, based on what is most important to them.

As well as explaining how things are done, the book also makes it easy for you to do it yourself as it is crammed with useful data: Telephone numbers, internet links, addresses, which up until now were not available in one place.

It is quite simply an invaluable and indispensable tool for all expats who live here, and those who are considering moving here. Do not leave home without it.
