Aquinas simplified for popular consumption

This thick paperback volume contains selections from the "Summa Theologica" with glossary, commentary, and heavy footnotes from Boston College professor Peter Kreeft. If you're looking to dive into the medieval Catholic philosophy of St. Thomas Aquinas, you may find this book a good starting point, as it explains technical terms while doing its best to make the Angelic Doctor's massive tome accessible for students today. It's still a very formidable text in its own right, presenting the dilemma of whether to read through the text first and then the footnotes later, or to undertake the painstaking process of reading through both at the same time. Kreeft's writings are sometimes a mixed bag, as he is not always wholly successful in popularizing philosophy, but this particular book (like "Philosophy 101: An Introduction to Philosophy") is one of his stronger efforts. Personally, I stopped reading after awhile because I realized I could ingest more by reading through Aquinas directly and looking things up at my leisure. Wonderful Guide to Aquinas

Thomas Aquinas (1225, 1274) was arguably the greatest philosopher in the 1800 years between Aristotle and Descartes. He is most famous for his 5 proofs of God’s existence, which are found in his most famous work, the “Summa Theologica” (Summary of Theology), a 2,000 page tome. That work intimidates those who have never read any Aquinas. But Peter Kreeft annotates and edits that work in his 500 page “Summa of the Summa”. Kreeft is one of the most popular of all modern philosophers and has written scores of books on philosophy that cover difficult topics such as moral relativism and Immanuel Kant’s philosophy in language that most adults can easily understand.

Aquinas addresses scores of topics in what he calls Questions and for each Question he poses distinct yes or no questions that he calls Articles. For each Article, he gives objections to his answer, cites an authority, gives his answer using reason and logic, and then responds to each objection. For example, on the Questions about ethics, Aquinas refutes both Kant’s duty based ethics and “the ends justify the means” ethics.

Kreeft has chosen to ignore most of Aquinas’s theological articles. He then selects 40 or 50 of the remaining Questions and then edits each Question down to what he considers the important Articles. In each Article, he often excludes non-essential parts and omits part of the answer. This is how he reduces 2,000 pages to 500.

Aquinas, like all good philosophers, uses precise unambiguous terms in his writing. However, some of these terms (like accident, form, and essence) have technical meanings that a modern reader must know to understand Aquinas. So Kreeft includes a glossary up front that a reader should read before reading any Aquinas. Kreeft also includes 300 footnotes that often either gives an example of Aquinas’s argument or shows how Aquinas has refuted errors made by more recent philosophers like Kant or Christopher Dawkins.

Bertrand Russell, an atheist, did not include Aquinas in his history of philosophy. But if you want a good sample of the works of one of the best philosophers of all time, read this book.

I can, I will, I choose, I have, I love, I create, I enjoy ... to write a review of Conscious Language

Great to see this book finally on Kindle. I write this review as an owner of the paperback, which I had to import to Australia. This book came highly recommended to me, so I had to get a hold of it. And I, in turn, highly recommend this book to anyone who still doesn't have it.

I've been interested in the power of words to shape our reality for a long, long time. There is a hidden subtext to the words we speak and hear and read. And while Bob's book isn't esoteric in a mystery school kind of way, it is esoteric in a more psychological context - how we betray our heart's desire with the words we speak to ourselves and to one another.

It's clear that Bob has studied this for years, and has systemised his knowledge. If you are new to this, then you would do well to get his book, and get up to speed quickly.

Many people are now catching on to the spells that words cast - Laurel Airica, for example, who exposes it in a poetic performance way (see youtube videos). Bob's work, is just as passionate and informed (possibly deeper) and is much more satisfying intellectually. As I said, it's systemised. Whereas other people's work tends to be more unstructured.

It's not often I have the opportunity to offer the first review of a book that I HAVE TO HAVE in my library. I consider it an honour to announce - declare - to others, that yes, this is a book that can change your life, and help others to change theirs.

But be warned. Once you get a taste for this, it stirs up your appetite for more. I ended up acquiring a number of his video packages, and have taken pages of notes. This man is full of insight.

Would you like to learn more about yourself?

This was a great book to read and learn how to help you apply yourself with where you are at today in life.
It is not to help you sale product or manifest material things. It is going to help you realize the importance of our language with speak and hear. The gifts of the fruits will grow with abundance when we see our body and hear the language. More importantly we will love like Jesus ask of us too on this earth.

A SERIES OF ESSAYS ON THE RELATION BETWEEN THESE TWO DISCIPLINES

Nancy Julia Chodorow (born 1944) is a feminist sociologist and psychoanalyst, and former professor at UC Berkeley; she has written other books such as The Reproduction of Mothering: Psychoanalysis and the Sociology of Gender, Individualizing Gender and Sexuality, The Power of Feelings: Personal Meaning in Psychoanalysis, Gender, and Culture, etc.

She wrote in the Introduction to this 1989 book, "This volume traces my thoughts about the relations between feminism and psychoanalytic theory over the last twenty years, since the beginning of the contemporary feminist movement. The essays argue for the necessity to include psychoanalytic understanding... in feminist theory and feminist understanding... in psychoanalysis... They begin from my argument for the importance of women's mothering for the constitution of psychic life, and of experiences of self and other. They focus on the relations and psychologies of gender and sexuality." (Pg. 13-14)

She states, "Psychoanalytic feminism has a rather complex and sometimes underground prehistory... I locate its political and theoretical origins with Karen Horney, a second-generation analyst whose early essays on femininity forcefully challenge Freud. Horney asserts a model of women with positive primary feminine qualities and self-valuation, against Freud's model of women as defective and forever limited, and she ties her critique of both psychoanalytic theory and women's psychology to her recognition of a male-dominant society and culture." (Pg. 2-3)

She suggests, "As long as women must live through their children, and men do not genuinely contribute to socialization and provide easily acccessible role models, women will continue to bring up sons whose sexual identity depends on devaluing femininity inside and outside themselves, and daughters who must accept this devalued position and resign themselves to producing more men who will perpetuate the system that devalues them." (Pg. 44)

She observes, "My investigation suggests that ... We can only understand gender difference, and human distinctness and separation, relationally and situationally. They are part of a system of asymmetrical social relationships embedded in inequalities of power, in which we grow up as selves, and as women and men. Our experience and perception of gender are processual; they are produced developmentally and in our daily and cultural lives." (Pg. 112)

She asserts, "feminism demands a theory of how we become sexed and gendered. Freud has given us such a theory. He has given us a rich account of the organization and reproduction of sex and gender, of how we are produced as gendered and sexed. Psychoanalytic theory is almost by definition a theory of sexuality and the way sexuality develops in women and men. Freud shows us why we do not exist apart from our particular sexualization and gender identification, even though that sexualization and that gender identification are created." (Pg. 168) She adds, "[Freud's] anti-woman statements are not intrinsic to psychoanalytic theory and modes of theorizing or to clinical interpretation, but counter to them. This is why there... has needed to be, such extensive feminist critique and revision of Freud. But because the theory is so useful, this critique and revision have often been rich and provocative." (Pg. 173)

ESSENTIAL READING! You will not regret purchasing this book!

Professor Larry Leemis delivers yet again! Over the years, I have become a connoiseur of multiple editions of this and other texts he has written. The author is an outstanding teacher with an engaging yet extremely comprehensive writing style, and I have yet to find any text in the field that even remotely comes close to this volume in quality, let alone surpasses it. (I have easily read between 7 and 12 far more expensive texts that attempt in vain to duplicate even mere portions of Leemis's classic!) I have been working in applied mathematics and reliability engineering for extremely complex multibillion-dollar global projects for almost 20 years now, in addition to university teaching, and this is still the book to which I refer all new researchers and students. You will not regret this purchase, and the likelihood that the text will fail you is effectively zero, as long as you approach the book and its subject-matter with serious intent to master it. (The proof I leave as an exercise for the reader!)

Let me once again emphasize: This book contains individual tables and diagrams that you will not find elsewhere, and these would, in and of themselves, easily justify the purchase price of the entire book!

Although the work is exemplary as-is, one suggestion for expanding subsequent editions would be to incorporate a chapter or two on related numerical methods (in the trenches, outside of comfortably standard pre-packaged environments like R and Stata) and discrete event simulation in reliability modeling. While space requirements would necessarily limit the depth to which these could be covered, both are among the author's many strengths, and the book could provide an outstanding touchstone for students and researchers interested in taking the material and going even deeper.

As a practitioner, I implore the publisher and author to continue producing new editions of this outstanding work! We will keep purchasing them!

Othonos and Kalli v. Kashyap

A review of this book can really only be given in comparison to the only other book on the subject at this time, "Fiber Bragg Gratings," by Kashyap.

The book has a wonderful balance between the theory and applications of Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs), something that is lacking in Kashyap's book. The first 4 chapters (not including the introduction) give a nicely detailed theory for FBGs, including several sections in the "Properties of Fiber Bragg Gratings" (chapter 3) that are not covered in Kashyap's treatment. The book then contains two relatively large chapters on the applications of FBGs, the first on "Applications of Bragg Gratings in Communications" (chapter 6), and "Fiber Bragg Grating Sensors" (chapter 7). FBG sensors are completely omitted by Kashyap, so this book is far more useful to those working in the area (as the reviewer is). Although this book does not includes as much in the way of "Apodization", "Band-pass Filters", and "Chirped Fiber Bragg Gratings", as Kashyap does. Kashyap also has an extensive chapter on "Fiber Grating Lasers and Amplifiers", which is a small section in this book.

Overall I would say 4.5, but I had to choose 4 or 5, so I went with 5, as this book has been a great help to me. Conversely I gave Kashyap a 3.

So, if you can only buy one FBG book, I think this is it. But check the tables of content for both books and compare them, as Kashyap may be of more use to some.

My final though is that this book does have the feel of an edited collection of some 700+ references, were as Kashyap does appear to have written a book which feels more like a text book. But as a reference book I personally prefer the first.

An excellent coverage of Bragg gratings

This book gives an excellent account of fiber Bragg gratings. The chapters on communications and sensing applications provided detailed insight into both areas. The communications arena has received much coverage recently, but until this book there has been very little discussion on sensing applications. A chapter addresses this issue and provides an excellent balance between fine points and overview. There is also a detailed discussion of photosensitivity-again something I found particularly useful, giving the reader a fair chance to follow this complicated field. I particularly liked the clear tables and charts. The remainder of the book was classified in a pretty standard form, with grating manufacture, properties and theory. Again, the authors should be commended on their clear presentation of useful information. As an example of the book's value, I generated the same graphs as presented in the theory section by using the equations therein, and have since generated many different grating structures and profiles-very nice indeed! Finally, it was a pleasant surprise to find a book with an up to date reference list. A suggestion for the publishers regarding subsequent editions, please space the information over more pages, by other book standards this should have been nearer 500 pages.

I knew nothing about fiber Bragg gratings before I picked up this book. Othonos and Kalli cover just about everything you would want to know about fiber Bragg gratings, from the physics of the fiber itself and how the gratings are created, to applications (including some of the more exotic ones). The material is presented in an understandable manner, with sufficient text descriptions - not just equations that you have to figure out yourself. If you're just beginning to learn about fiber Bragg gratings, I recommend this book highly.

This was the only book i could find on the land cruiser lj70 2.4TD, it has som very good descriptions of the engine and engine related parts, but i found it seriously lacking in the electronics department. There are som good diagrams, but no pictures, or descriptions of the electronics.

For the novice to intermediate-level hobbyist like me, this book is a great resource! Toyota USA can't provide this kind of details, and getting stuff from Toyota Australia is very hard. I don't think it'll be as detailed as the Toyota factory manual, but I'll be happy with it for now.
It has a lot of drawings, pictures, and step-by-step instructions on how to do things yourself, or at least know how to avoid being swindled by mechanics not worth their title/profession.

Sweet Story of Child Trying Her Best

Scary title. Scary pics. Great for kids who loves spiders anyways. Would not recommend for kids scared of 'em! Moral of story is mother is proud of daughter for trying to get a jar of peaches for food prep. In the end mother suggest trading chores with her daughter.
