About the Author
Thomas C. O'Guinn is Professor of Marketing at The University Of Wisconsin-Madison. He is also Research Fellow in the Center for Brand and Product Management, also at U.W.-Madison. Thomas has published widely. He has served on many editorial and advisory boards, and his research has won several awards. He has assisted several major marketers with their advertising and marketing. He is currently involved with UW-Madison's Design for Business Thinking initiative. He has never owned a mini-van.

Chris Allen is the Arthur Beerman Professor of Marketing at the University of Cincinnati. He has also held faculty positions at Northwestern University and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. His research has investigated the influence of affect and emotion in decision-making and persuasive communication. Other published work has examined consumption issues in diverse domains such as determinants of household spending, motives for blood donation, fostering energy conservation, and the effects of news reporting on consumers' attitudes. It has appeared in numerous journals and compilations, including JCR, JMR, JM, JPP&M, JBR, Journalism Quarterly, Journal of Advertising, Harvard Business Review, Advances in Nonprofit Marketing, and Handbook of Consumer Psychology. Chris has served on the editorial review boards for JCR, JCP, JM and JA, and has been a frequent reviewer for programs such as the Ferber Award, and the AMA/Howard, ACR/Sheth, and MSI Dissertation Competitions. He has also served as program administrator for P&G's Marketing Innovation Research Fund--a funding source for dissertation research. He received his Ph.D. in Marketing and Consumer Psychology from Ohio State.

Richard J. Semenik is Professor of Marketing and former Dean of the College of Business at Montana State University-Bozeman, as well as founder and Executive Director of the College's Center for Entrepreneurship for the New West. Before coming to Montana State, Rich served as head of the Marketing Department at the Eccles School of Business at the University of Utah and Associate Dean for Research. He also has co-founded two companies. With expertise in marketing strategy, advertising, and branding, he has given numerous speeches and seminars across the United States, as well as in Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Finland, Mexico, Germany, France, Belgium, and Scotland. He also has been a visiting research scholar at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and a visiting scholar at Anahuac Universidad in Mexico City, Mexico. His research has appeared in the Journal of Advertising, Journal of Consumer Research, and Journal of International Advertising, as well as the proceedings of the American Marketing Association and Association for Consumer Research conferences. He has consulted with major corporations, advertising agencies, and early stage start-up companies including IBM, Premier Resorts International, SFX Entertainment, the Van Gogh Museum (Netherlands), American Investment Bank, Printingforless.com, InfoGears, Scientific Materials, and LigoCyte Pharmaceuticals. Professor Semenik also served on the National Board of Directors of the American Advertising Museum and the Industry Relations Board of the American Academy of Advertising. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan, an MBA from Michigan State University, and a Ph.D. from The Ohio State University.

Every page has a distracting line down the center/middle between columns of TEXT,,,

I read a lot of texts, manuals and how-to books. As much as the "For Dummies" series gets heckled by some, they do have a good system for pointing out key items and important topics. However when I pick up the PROMO2 book and read a chapter there is always that Darn vertical line in the middle of most pages, for me it's a DISTRACTON not a help to follow along with the content. Although there are some good illustrations and boxed highlighted topics the text is VERY BUSY which makes it hard to read through and follow along with the topic material. Some of the screen shots of flyers, pages and web sites don't handle the shrinking of the texts very well, there are some issues with scaling for readability. In contrast, I have another text book "MARKETING an Introduction by Armstrong/Kotler" that does not suffer the readability issues found in "PROMO2".

Not what I was expecting

Looking for the book "Power Tarot", I some how mistook the two I guess. Although I found and ordered the proper book, I must have forgotten to take this one out of my shopping cart. I'll review it since I have it, but I'm not rating it based on the fact that it's not what I was looking for.

Firstly, it's not *really* a tarot book. It's a spell book. Not all of the so-called spells in this book utilize tarot cards. Basically, using the themes of the major arcana, the author sets out to explain each card and suggests spells she would associate with the individual card interpretations. Some spells require you to use cards, some require you to effectively destroy cards, some require you to photocopy cards, but most do not involve the use of a tarot card at all.

It's a new age hodgepodge of stuff, including an African tradition of crossroad work (though minimally). Most of the spell ingredients are pretty simple and things easily acquired if you don't already have them at home. Lots of areas are covered, from talking to the dead to strengthening your relationship with your mother. The back contains an index to help you find what you're looking for. Are they any good? Do they work? I wouldn't know lol.

Spells she associated with the Devil card, for instance, are 'Devil Dough' for money and prosperity, 'Sexy Devil' "to bring out the Lil' Kim or Dennis Rodman lurking within", 'Path of the Beast' "to prepare you for the descent into the darker side of life", 'Out of Bondage Spell', and 'The Devil's Dregs' "to open your psychic intuition for card reading. None of those involve the use of a tarot card. Further, I'm not sure about bringing out the Lil' Kim in anyone.

In addition to a brief explanation of the major arcana cards, she also gives a little history for some (but not all) of the practices and uses of the ingredients. Had such information regarding origin etc been provided in every case, it would've made the book more interesting to me. Unfortunately, this book isn't very even in that respect. If she provided background info for each spell and all ingredients used (the what, where and why) I, personally, would have found it a more interesting read. But, I will give it three stars because I thought this book was pretty unique. It's okay for what it is, but I think the author would do well to refine it.

Some of the spells don't seem to jibe well with the card meanings, but over all she does okay in that area. I'll assume the author was just ... looking for a way to be creative. I will admit that it's different. Not exactly useful for me, but different. For $5 or so, just to get the free super-saver shipping, it's not a bad buy if this sort of thing interests you. Mine, however, will be finding a new home at the local Goodwill. =-/

The Lady's call sign YO-3A 007, Code Name Wraith

This novel by first time author Mark A. Hewitt is a refreshing change from the predictable plot lines of many of today's thriller genre. From the opening pages of the prologue to the closing pages of the epilogue, the reader is treated to an intricate, well developed story of good and evil, honor and duty, trust and betrayal.

The central character is a quiet, elegant lady of a certain age whose career in the service of country began over the jungles of Viet Nam. Rescued from the oblivion of the scrap heap by Greg Lynche, former CIA Chief of Air Branch and partner of Duncan Hunter, retired Marine F-4 pilot, the lady flies clandestine missions in dangerous air space across the world.

The lead character, Duncan Hunter is one of those "daring young men in their flying machines" a newly minted First Lieutenant Marine Aviator, who comes to the attention of the head of a special access program labeled 17 Nails designed to identify future recruits for unique and time-sensitive special access programs. Hunter retires and takes a position with the United States Border Patrol as Director of Aviation Maintenance. He introduces the Border Patrol to the benefits of Schweizer SA2-37B (the YO-3) quiet airplane as part of the illegal spotter program. 17 Nails is activated and Hunter is recruited into the clandestine world by his friend and mentor Greg Lynche.

The novel chronicles the Hunter/Lynche/007 partnership set against the backdrop of recent and current geopolitical events, and the tools and trade of the aviation, clandestine and global terrorist communities. The characters that populate these communities are rich and diverse. The reader comes to realize that one knows these people - even the "bad guys". The technical descriptions carry the narrative without overpowering it. Even the "juicy bits" work in context.

Compelling and fast-paced tech-thriller with international intrigue and great characters

Mark Hewitt's first novel, Special Access, kept this reader enthralled. Thoroughly researched and vividly written, Special Access takes the reader through a decade of historical events and weaves them into a fascinating tale exposing the fringes of the "black world" and its clandestine programs requiring "special access" and the highest of security clearances.

Hewitt's work brings life to a large cast of central, heroic characters with whom the reader will grow quite fond and against whom the legion of villains will conspire.

The technologies Hewitt invents and the world events he conjures are entirely plausible giving the reader much to savor and consider.

As an avid Tom Clancy fan, I found Hewitt's Special Access in the heart of the envelope of works I enjoy most.

The only drawback of the completed work comes from the publishing process where a few layout errors may distract a discerning reader.

Overall, Special Access is a great, "can't put it down" read and a prime candidate for a screen play and sequel.

Absolutely stunning! A must read!

With over a hundred books bought from Amazon and a couple of reviews, this one stands apart from the rest. I'm the guy that grabs the latest Brad Thor, Vince Flynn, Lee Child novel on his way to the airport. Good fun reads to keep you distracted for a cross country flight. This one is remarkable and different. It's interesting and captivating, and suggests it is all too real.

The cover and title first caught my attention. If you're a member of the intelligence community, the title gives you pause and I thought, "That's different and probably illegal." I had no idea this book would grab me from the first pages. Prepare to become emotionally involved--how many times have you read a book twice? For me, never, until now.

The story, while fiction, is well researched and one that rings disturbingly true as if it has been ripped from the pages of today's newspapers or even the Drudge Report. The political awakening of the protagonist will likely send conservative readers flocking to this book and liberals fleeing or flinging foul balls. I think I'll have one scene indelibly embedded in my head for a very long time; the end of chapter 53. Mr. Hewitt has an "old school" evil streak in him when dealing with the worst of the worst terrorists.

You first get a sense you're reading an autobiography of a CIA pilot. The technical writing and descriptions of flying, for an old pilot like me, left me thinking the author wrote it for guys like me, special operations personnel, and members of the intelligence community. But it really is a "peek behind the curtain" of black programs--real world counterterrorism and counterdrug operations. Hewitt demonstrates he knows his stuff throughout the book but in one instance, he might be criticized for being a little heavy handed with the treatment of a minor but important character. Much of the work in the second-half of the book comes from today's headlines, so if you're a political junkie, hold on tight--you're in for a thrilling ride.

The best surprises of a second reading were several sub-themes, in the same vein as the possible political interpretations of L. Frank Baum's Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The author indicts America's immigration policy, the use of drones, and the malfeasance of the press--what could possibly happen if anyone is let into the country and the press doesn't vet a politician? Liberal readers may give the author credit for his handling of drones and their ethical use; Conservative readers will just go nuts; the book will likely end up in a conservative book club and become a cult classic.

Special Access is also a love story--I think the ladies will enjoy this book though the early technical writing might scare them off a little. My bride read it and said, "Hang in there--it's worth the read." He made my wife cry! The scoundrel!

This book kept me turning pages; it's a very fast read and impossible to put down, especially the final 200-300 pages. I understand why other reviewers look for a sequel--it's that good and that different, and the author definitely has something new and exciting. It's interesting. The technologies introduced in this book, if they are not the product of a secret lab someplace, they should be. And the accuracy is stunning; if you Google Earth Monrovia, Liberia's airport there's a jet sitting in the grass. Is it live or is it Memorex? Author Hewitt probably needs to be aware of little black helicopters coming for him in the night.

Unlike most books in this genre, where the reader can predict an inevitable outcome, Special Access has so many plot twists and turns at the end, with the tension winding tighter and tighter, that it will leave you stunned, shaking your head, and muttering "Wow!" He hammers hot button items that will leave the politically correct reader apoplectic. The story never lets up. I didn't see the twist at the end and shouted--when was the last time a book made you twist and shout? It is a fun fast read.

Other reviewers indicated references to the richness of a Clancy or Vince Flynn novel; I would agree with them but lean more toward Ian Fleming with a dash of Clive Cussler--is Hewitt's hero James Bond or Dirk Pitt in a flight suit? Hewitt clearly has a book to elbow into the well-entrenched niche of the most famous authors. What he has going for him is, in my view, the obvious experience of being part of the intelligence community, which Clancy, Cussler and Flynn lacked and had to rely on those in the business for help. Tackling the political realities of the US as a backdrop should turn this into a best seller. This must-read book must have been a challenge to get through the CIA's Publication Review Board without redactions.

Special Access is an admirable first effort with some of the most intriguing characters and dynamic scenes I've seen in a very long time. Poetic and patriotic, interesting and intriguing, it is one of the best novels I have ever read; this won't be my last Mark Hewitt book. I want to meet and talk to this guy at a book signing and tell him what a great job he's done. Where's the next one!?

If you had to buy one book on how to create value for your customers and have a better life and make more money, this is the book. 30 years in the making, Larry Kendall is the NINJA MASTER. He and his partners started The Group, Inc., in Fort Collins, Colorado and became one of the most successful real estate companies in America. Just Some Comments on the Translation

Livy's history is fast-paced and colourful. T. J. Luce's notes are very helpful and his translation is very readable, but sometimes his word choices are so modern as to be jarring; for example, "iure gentium," "the law of nations," is anachronistically translated as "international law" in the first half of the book, although it then becomes "the law of nations" in the second half. Another jarring anachronism is "sadist" for "carnifex," a word that means "executioner" (2.35)--not the sexual cruelty named after the Marquis de Sade. And since there are so many Latin-English cognates that have a similar connotation I find it misleading when translators take such liberties. Here are some other examples:

"legum humanarum" becomes "civilized" (1.28, Luce) whereas the Loeb and S�lincourt have "laws of humanity." "inhumanumque" is translated as "barbaric" (1.48) instead of "inhuman." Since the concept of the human as a moral standard is a new one at that time (I'm thinking in particular of the idea of "humanitas"), it is essential to keep it in the text. If Livy had meant "barbaric" he could have used "barbari." To make matters worse, "saevi exempli" (savage example) is later translated as "inhuman example."

"sceleris tragici exemplum" is translated as "a tragic spectacle to rival those of Greece" (1.46). Luce's gloss of "to rival those of Greece" is helpful, but Foster's use of a footnote to make the gloss in the Loeb translation allows the translation itself to remain more literal.

In such cases, it's as if the translator is trying to "improve" upon Livy by using a different word from the one Livy used. But comparing it to the original, I think the more faithful translation is the more colorful and powerful one. Further, if you're really trying to enter into the thought of the original, or are using the translation for academic writing, then it is very helpful to have a translation that stays as close to the original as possible.

However, while the Loeb generally seems to be more faithful that is not always the case. For example, the Loeb awkwardly translates "iniuste impieque" (I.32) as "unduly and against religion" whereas Luce more fittingly has "unjustly and impiously."

For "puro pioque duello" (1.32), Luce has "a pure and pious war" (1.32, Luce) and Foster "warfare just and righteous."

For "iusta ac legitima" (1.48), Luce has "just and legitimate" and Foster "just and lawful."

Thus, sometimes Luce is admirably literal but other times his translations are rather loose.

Livy for Contemporary Readers

Professor Luce, an eminent Livian scholar, has rendered the first five books of Livy's "Ab Urbe Condita" in concise English that not only retains the essence of the Latin but also conveys the vividness of the narrative. In other words, he tells the tales of the founding of Rome in an entertaining manner that is accessible to today's students, who have little patience for long-winded or stilted prose.

The book includes an informative introduction, two maps, a brief chronology, and copious notes. My only quibble is with the index, which has been geared for scholars of Roman history. For example, a student looking up the dictator Cincinnatus must be aware that he is listed by the gens name of Quinctius (There is no cross-reference.); and then the student has to decide between Titus, Lucius, and Quintus. While this is good practice for the serious scholar of Roman history, it might be infuriating for the casual reader (One hopes that Oxford will correct this flaw in a future edition). Nevertheless, the book is so enjoyable that I recommend it highly and have adopted it for my Roman Civilization class.
