The Queen: A Biography of Elizabeth II, by Ben Pimlott

"There will be no better biography of Elizabeth II as a figure of state until her official one appears—and perhaps not even then."
—The Independent

"One of the many merits of Ben Pimlott's superbly judicious biography of Elizabeth II is that it understands this connection between monarchy and masses, and carefully evokes its political importance."
—The New York Times Book Review

"The best all-around study of the Queen so far, showing understanding as well as amused irony."
—Sunday Telegraph

Written by Ben Pimlott, considered Britain's most respected political biographer, The Queen brings us the most authentic life yet of the reigning monarch. For the first time, Buckingham Place opened its doors and those closest to the queen provided compelling new information into Elizabeth's life and reign. New sources include the unpublished diaries of Jock Colville, public secretary to both Churchill and Elizabeth, as well as interviews with Princess Margaret, Archbishop of Canterbury Lord Runcie, and longtime private secretary Lord Charteris.

Amazon.com Review
Elizabeth II has quietly become one of the longest-reigning monarchs in English history. Future historians will sort out her impact on British life and politics, but until then Ben Pimlott offers a good summation of her first seven decades. He succeeds in making the monarch seem like a living, breathing person, as opposed to the emotionless figure that she is sometimes made out to be in the media. And her long-lasting public life is much more eventful and interesting than it might seem at first glance. Intrusions into royal privacy, for example, are hardly an invention of the paparazzi. In addition to an interesting biography, The Queen provides a useful introduction to British politics in the second half of the 20th century.

From Library Journal
There are a number of good biographies of Elizabeth II, but this one is different. Pimlott is primarily a political biographer, and while other works have focused on Elizabeth the woman, he goes further, exploring the role of the queen and how the events of the past few decades have changed it. Is the monarch just a figurehead, or are there specific governmental actions she can take? How did the royal family lose its privacy, along with much public respect? Pimlott tackles these questions and other historical, psychological, and sociological issues surrounding the queen and her family. This well-documented, compelling look at the British monarchy will be appreciated by readers seriously interested in Britain's heritage and future.?Katharine Garstka, Intergraph Corp., Huntsville, Ala.

From Booklist
This popular, but certainly not depthless, treatment of the life of the present British sovereign joins the ranks of several biographies of the subject already in print. But if any library collection is still in need of a well-rounded and approachable one, this is the ticket. Although never to be considered the definitive biography, Pimlott's presentation is no cut-and-paste job, not a simple rehash of tired facts and attitudes. The author, a professor at the University of London, takes his job seriously as he delves freshly into archival material, going to great lengths to separate image--often fostered by palace public relations--from reality, particularly in terms of the queen's personality. The job she has is not an easy one; her task, as the monarchy seeks a workable niche in a rapidly changing society, has been "to be ordinary and extraordinary at the same time." The author casts meaningful light on the queen's private side, especially her relationship with her husband, Prince Philip, and with her prime ministers. Brad Hooper

"The Family of Families"
By Scamp Lumm
Her Majesty's immediate family, her mother, also Queen Elizabeth, later the Queen Mum, her father, King George VI, and her sister Margaret, were considered the "family of families" by the British public throughout King George VI's reign, particularly during the War years of 1939-1945. When Ben Pimlott wrote this book in 1996 the year of Her Majesty's 70th birthday, the Royal family's reputation was beseiged during a time when (British, I assume, anti-monarchical) republicanism was at its height and on the rise. However, during the first decades of Queen Elizabeth II's lengthy reign, the publics' feelings on the monarchy were unquestionably favorable which you'll understand by reading the book. Millions the world over watched Her Majesty's wedding, (when she was still a Princess), and later her coronation; for many people, it was the first time they had ever watched television. So Ben Pimlott writes in his Preface that his book "is a book about the Queen in people's heads, as well as at Buckingham Palace".

Ben Pimlott was "absolutely a patriot", his wife declared to the press following his death at age 58, almost a year ago, (he died on April 10, 2004, the day before Easter), after a short travail with leukemia. "He wanted, and believed, that the world and Britain could be a better place and that Goldsmiths could be a better place, and that poor people ought to have a brilliant university." Stumbling on his obituaries, I've become enamored with his life's work, (although short), and impressed with how well he was thought of; so many people were saddened by his passing. He was Warden of Goldsmiths University of London at the time. He had attended Oxford University when Bill Clinton was then a student there for one year. Professor Ken O Morgan wrote of him in an obituary that "he was one of the most important historians ever of the British left". Poor Brit, he was born on the fourth of July!

Ben Pimlott wrote two other biographies before The Queen, one about Hugh Dalton, another Labour leader who was Chancellor during WWII and also son of Queen Victoria's chaplain, and Harold Wilson, who was prime minister and also of the Labour party. He also edited and made available to the public Hugh Dalton's private diaries. He was somewhat apprehensive about writing this book, anticipating criticism from his colleagues.

Her Majesty invited Ben Pimlott over to Windsor Castle while he was writing this book, but interestingly, the book's contents were not discussed; he was merely invited over, I assume, for tea and a nice chat. In writing this book, he interviewed several former prime ministers, Princess Margaret, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Lord Runcie. He used The diaries of Jock Colville, Queen Elizabeth's and Churchill's private secretary for source material. The Telegraph noted that he wrote this book to "examine constitutional issues such as the royal prerogative, her relationships with her prime ministers and her role as Head of the Commonwealth. These were matters which had tended to become obscured by the scandals and the gossip which were increasingly the preoccupation of some sections of the media." In 2002, he gave a lecture on the monarchy at St. Paul's Cathedral. This past January at Goldsmiths, the Ben Pimlott building was dedicated.

I write all the above about Ben Pimlott to suggest that this is the definitive biography of Her Majesty, the queen. It is a rather lengthy one about a rather lengthy reign. Ben Pimlott's treatment of her life is extremely thorough; the many chapters' headings are years. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Her Majesty's childhood; I also knew precious little about the majority of her life. She was one of King George V's favorite grandchildren. She did not have the typical childhood friends when she was little. She had her sister Margaret, of course, but of other childhood friends, she had mostly visitors. She and her sister were babysat on occasion of the U.S. Ambassador to Great Britain's, dubbed the "evil envoy" by the public, visit to her father the King by Rose Kennedy, the ambassador's wife. She was closest in age to Ted and Jean of this Kennedy clan. Other Americans became enamored with her, most notably Harry Truman. No telling how many hands she has shaken or people she has met the world over. My mother tells me that everyone has often commented that she is more beautiful in person, more beautiful than the best photos or portraits of her. A British aquaintance of mine who has met the Queen told me that "she's only 5 feet tall, you know", yet he is more than 6 feet tall, as Pimlott was, which accounts for his inaccuracy; she is actually 5'4".

I had hoped to learn more about how the Sovereign's power has been diminished by, I assume, Parliament, and to understand more just how different America's structure of government is from the British system, but, again, that is subject material for other books. I had come to the conclusion in the 90's that the Queen should be taxed like everyone else, makes sense to Americans, yet King George V had always urged the Windsor family not to give in to these parliamentary demands, demands that, in the 90's had reached such a pitch and fervor, that the monarch, finally, acquiesced which Pimlott reveals. Another biographer of royalist sentiments is Kenneth Rose who wrote a book on King George V who Pimlott mentions now and then. When I read in Rose's book the chapter on Constitutional Monarchy, I was so shocked that I couldn't finish the chapter or the book, (it was actually a difficult, but substantive, chapter to read). Didn't we Americans get rid of the king to get the Constitution? How can there be a king and a constitution at the same time??? Anyway, the one thing that enamours me to the queen is that she studied constitutional issues, long before she ever ascended the throne. What a smart monarch! (I'm afraid I'm fast becoming a royalist, how unamerican of me!) Anyway, CHEERS, and GOD SAVE THE QUEEN!

The Queen has Sold Her Heritage
By Laurel Edwards
With the Constitutionally-mandated reduction in the sovereign's power in the past hundred years, it's easy to see the Queen of England as a figurehead. A mascot, if you will, whose only powers are to be advised and to consent. A study of Ben Pimlott's nearly seven hundred pages will teach you why this has happened, particularly in the last nearly fifty years.
The Queen: A Biography of Elizabeth II is something of an oddity in today's world--a study of the political power the monarch still holds and how that power has been wielded (or not) during the current reign. It's fascinating, and in a world filled with tawdry junk bios about the private lives of the Royal Family, this factual reference book is a gem.
It's true the Queen commands less politically than any of her predecessors, but that's more her own fault than anyone else's. She appears to have CHOSEN, for some reason known only to her, to reign but not rule. Even her father, George VI, that most dutiful of monarchs, often made important decisions in critical situations---and no one questioned him because he was the King. His daughter has spent her reign, since 1952, playing it safe, never pushing the Constitutional line between Sovereign and Government. Because the line's never been pushed by the Queen, the Government has encroached ever more obviously onto what was once unquestionably the Monarch's territory.
It would be difficult for the Queen to push back now; she's already given up too much. It will be nearly impossible for the next monarch (most likely Prince Charles) to recover lost ground; he will most likely be only a ceremonial king, in the manner of the Danes and Swedes. Elizabeth II has allowed herself, her decendants, and the British monarchy itself to become Constitutionally hemmed in, and it's doubtful they'll ever cut their way out.
Pimlott explains all of this with several examples of laws passed since 1952, each limiting the sovereign's power a bit more. The Queen has, for whatever reason, not refused her signature to any of these laws though, technically, she still has that right.
Elizabeth II: A Biography is well-written and exhaustively referenced. The many photographs included aren't the ones that always show up in biographies about the Royal Family; there are several I've never seen before. There are no anonymous sources to question; everyone is either well-known, or he/she is explained to the reader. This may be a better book for English readers than for Americans, since several of the matters discussed pertain only to the English, and Americans may be bored by the minutiae of individual British case law.
Final decision: A tad dry, but the best examination of Elizabeth II's reign I've seen.

A Bluewater Bay Novel

After losing a rigged cooking show competition — and a potential lover — to another baker, Frederic Jackson packs up his considerable baggage and moves to Bluewater Bay. He uses the network’s hush money to buy a new bakery where he hopes the small town’s revitalized economy will let him start anew.

Blaire Caruthers never wanted to work for his father at Caruthers Industries. He should have known that fixing the company’s show results was a mistake, and that choosing another man over kind, generous Frederic was an even bigger one. But the damage is done. To escape the fallout, he’s gone to Bluewater Bay to oversee the company’s interest in Wolf’s Landing merchandise.

Stuck in a small, nowhere town doing a job he hates, Blaire wants nothing more than to prove to Frederic he’s changed. However, Frederic struggles to trust the man who betrayed him once already. As Blaire loses ground with his father, and Frederic starts falling back into self-destructive habits, they both have to find the balance and control that’s been missing from their lives.

How the Cookie Crumbles, A Bluewater Bay Novel, Jaime Samms.

Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews

Genre:LGBTQIA, Romance

More Bluewater...I love this series, with books written by different authors. I love the way people from earlier books crop up in cameo roles, it gives the series a real feeling of continuity. Jaime has written lots of novels, but this one is a first for me, it won’t be the last though, really enjoyed it.

Its fun how each writer has their own stamp, and yet the series still falls together so well with each new book. I have read most of them now and look forward to more...This time we meet baker Freddie, and Blaire, son of the TV network head. The network had run a reality style cooking competition, and Freddie and Blaire fell in and out of a potential relationshipthere, with Blaire rigging the competition to let his new lover, Jerry, win. Jerry is a real Bitch Queen, vicious, user of people type person and I enjoyed his appearances here, its good to have someone like him in a story.
Freddie used the hush money to buy his bakery, and should have been set for a profitable future, but things in his life interfere and he’s constantly running himself ragged trying to keep afloat. I loved Freddie, so loyal, adored his gran, tried to do his best for his dad even though the guy’s never been a good dad, far from it in fact, and Freddie is still affected by his upbringing. He fits in so well with the locals and the film people, he’s just such a sweetheart you can’t help loving him. He’s so stressed though, so on edge, overworking, not eating, not sleeping enough that he’s in danger of collapse. He’s so independent though he won't accept help, and to top it all off Blaire is back. That's all he needs, he’s still heartbroken at the way they ended. He’s rigidly cold to Blaire, polite– just, but makes it clear he isn’t welcome.
Blaire, well I didn’t like him at first, heseemeda typical money-will-buy-me-everything guy, and I couldn’t get over how he’d hurt Freddie. Blaire knows he c ocked up though, knows Freddie was the best thing in his life for a long while, and wants to try again. He’s got a tough road to tread though, he knows that, but he’s determined, and as things continued I began to see that he’d not intended to hurt Freddie, more a case of getting one over on his bigoted, controlling father and not thinking about the effect on Freddie. His dad isa horrible, very manipulative man, and I guess some of his lack of consideration rubbed off onto Blaire and that’s why he just didn’t think about the hurt he’d cause Freddie in what he did.
Slowly he works his way into Freddie’s life again . Its two steps forward and one back. He just can’t help his natural way of using money to solve things and Freddie won’t accept that. They have several struggles over things. Blaire only intends help and Freddie sees interference, Freddie just wants to make his shop work and Blaire sees him being a control freak and making himself ill. Its a fun read, very intuitive of human nature. There’s others in the book too, Alicia, camera woman ( I think) who’s a great friend to Freddie, Derek and Gin from the Burnt toast B&B ( great to read more of them), Lee and Vincent who work for Blaire’sfather and are his assistants, and many regulars in the bakery customers.

I loved the tenderness here, the way Blaire really had learned his lesson in treating people baldly, he works really hard to put things in place so that he can try to make amends to Freddieand also to help the town. He likes the people, the way they see him, speak to himand wants to be a part of it. He’s finally grown up, finally learned that his dad is never going to let up on the control, and that its time to let go, tostart looking at his ownlife and the effect he has on others.
I really enjoyed this story, the way it wasn’t the usual format with a build up to a huge drama towards the end, but full of minor ones along the way. I enjoyed the way Blaire stuck at it, didn't let Freddie rebuff him, kept his resolve, and finally saw what was important in his life. I loved the Freddie, Blaire, and Blaire’sdad showdown. Croutons at dawn, well– at suppertime anyway!

Stars: Five,another great Bluewater instalment

How the Cookie Crumbles
By Angie Elle
Thank you to RIPTIDE PUBLISHING and Netgalley for providing a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

How the Cookie Crumbles was a sweet story about a man who doesn’t know when to ask for help because no one has ever been there for him, and the man determined to change that. This was the twelfth book in the Bluewater Bay series (all by different authors,) and I didn’t feel lost while reading it. There were some characters that I found interesting, so I will go back and check the back list for the series so I can find out if they have books.

Frederic and Blaire are on the outs at the start of the story, as their history didn’t leave them in a good place. But Blaire knows he made a mistake, and he’s here to prove to Frederic that he loves him and wants to be with him. After being paid off to keep silent about a rigged cooking show, Frederic makes his way to Bluewater Bay and starts his own bakery – Cookie Crumbles. Unfortunately, the money Frederic made from the reality show isn’t enough to keep him afloat and when his father bleeds him nearly dry, Frederic begins to work himself into the ground. Frederic was a bit scatterbrained, though I think this was more because he was overwhelmed by his to-do list than actually being ditzy, and he was incredibly clumsy. To be honest, this story reminded me very much of the billionaire trope saturating the market right now. Except this one happens to be about two men, and Frederic, while stereotypically clumsy (again, specific to this trope,) is way more likable and experienced than any of the clumsy heroines I’ve read. Whnen Blaire shows up, it’s under the guise of doing business for his father, but his work could have been done anywhere. Proximity is what he needs.

While this was told from both points of view, it was clearly Frederic’s story and Blaire was just along for the ride. Parts of it felt a bit slow; it centered mostly around Blaire trying to win Frederic back, and the back and forth was sometimes a bit much. While we are given a resolution to Frederic and Blaire’s situation, I feel like at the end of the book, Frederic was pulled out of character and maybe just a little too brazen for me to buy. My favorite parts of the story were their pasts – Frederic’s upbringing was very sad, and Blaire’s father was such a jerk there was no pleasing him. I did like what tore Blaire and Frederic apart, and Blaire’s revelations as he finally realized how much he’d hurt Frederic and that he’d taken much more from him than some reality show prize.

As I mentioned earlier, there were some interesting characters I’d like to read more about, and I liked the author’s writing style enough to read more from her. There was nothing extraordinary about How the Cookie Crumbles, but it was entertaining and I’m glad I read it.

A- rating...
By Smitten with Reading
My Review:

I've enjoyed most of the Bluewater Bay novels, but this one rates up there as one of my favorites in the series.

Blaire and Frederic have a history, but it's not a happy one. Blaire was in charge of a cooking show/contest that Frederic was participating in. He *thought* that he and Blaire had a connection so it was a blow to him to find out that not only had that not been true, but that Blaire rigged the contest so the guy who he was sleeping with won. It all came out and was a huge fiasco...one that Frederic got paid off so he'd never talk about it. But he needed the kitchen equipment, not the cash...for his bakery. His father wouldn't have been able to guilt him out of the equipment...like he has every bit of money Frederic has earned.

So, Frederick is in Bluewater Bay doing everything he can to make his struggling bakery a success. He works 18-22 hours a day and is exhausted. But he keeps thinking if he does one more thing, then he can make enough money to catch a break, hire a helper, or fix the oven that keeps malfunctioning. Then something else happens and it all comes crashing down.

And then Blaire walks back into his world...making everything just that much worse.

Screwing Frederic over was the biggest regret of Blaire's life. He's in Bluewater Bay hoping to fix that mistake. But he quickly realizes that Frederic needs more than just a boyfriend (one that he doesn't want anyway...there's no way he's going to trust Blaire again), he needs a keeper before he ends up dead from exhaustion or the klutziness that comes with that exhaustion. Blaire is also working to set up his own business out from under his father's thumb...so he has a lot on his plate too.

I really liked these two. I loved how much Frederic really needs Blaire, although he is so stubborn and independent, he refuses to give in. I love that Blaire is this totally put together gorgeous executive who should have it all together, but he's completely taken down at the knees by his need for Frederic. I loved that Frederic is so determined at the same time he's barely surviving, but that will of his was so freaking strong. I loved him and his determination...until it became dangerous. I loved that Blaire was able to see what Frederic needed and despite everything, he'd rather have Frederic mad and hate him than see Frederic suffer for his stubborn will to do it all himself.

There's a lot happening in this story...for both men and their family situation on top of them both struggling to get businesses off the ground. Top that off with a fledgling relationship...and yeah, they have way too much on their plates. A lot of stress. But even when Frederic was falling-down exhausted, they connected and wanted them to find their HEA in the worst way. It was a really good book. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.

From Booklist
Gr. 4^-7. Terban explains the meanings and origins (if known) of more than 600 idioms and proverbs in this intriguing book. Although no sources are provided, Terban has obviously done a great deal of research. In some cases, such as "open a can of worms," he discusses the meaning of an idiom without really explaining its origin and bizarre originality. In others, like "face the music," he provides more than one possible explanation. Each page includes one lightly comical line drawing of a child expressing feelings such as quizzical, annoyed, amused, or distressed. Not only is this a good resource for teachers who discuss idioms in the classroom but it also has some appeal for browsers, though readers who come looking for the logic behind the English language may leave thinking it "curiouser and curiouser." Great for English Language Learners
By E. Begody
I've used Scholastic Dictionary of Idioms for two years. I introduce it as part of bell work activity. It's a time saver so I can occupy learners while I check admit slips and complete attendance. Students copy the sample sentence. If the sentence doesn't give a clear meaning-usage, I modify it, but the text still remains enormously useful because I give the students the meaning(s)and origin(s) Terban's research provides. I work with English Language Learners. Ironically students sometimes remember the meaning(s) and origins better than the content of the rest of the period when I quiz them. At least that's what my research reveals. I highly recommend this text for any teachers who work with elementary, middle school, and high school. In fact, I use this text for 11th and 12th graders.

Delightful
By Annie M.
The book lists many idioms (Alphabeticlally), and provides examples for their use as well as their origin when available. Descriptions are brief and to the point and are accompanied by cute illustrations to break the monotony. I work with children and found that those from grade 2 and on enjoy leafing through the book to find an 'interesting idiom' to quiz their friends about, or to look for a specific idiom's meaning. I utilize it in games and 'trivia' and the children find it delightful. I highy recommend it.

Crazy and Wild
By A. J. Baltes
This book's not your average Joe. It contains so many idioms it will make your head spin. That's a plus and a minus. It doesn't go into a ton of detail. But it fills the bill if you are teaching a class with it.

Hell Week STEP ONE: EMBRACE ADVERSITY
If I had to choose one word that embodies Hell Week and the method behind it, that word would be adversity. For soldiers undergoing the military version of the seven-day challenge, it’s all about the will to continue. That’s why I love that quote from Churchill in the introduction: “If you are going through hell, keep going.”

As you get ready for Hell Week, the notion of adversity always should be foremost in your mind. My clients are sometimes confused by this mandate when I first start working with them, since my method is so much about focusing on success. They’re confusing failure with adversity. Failure is a negative. Adversity is a positive. Indeed, it’s one of the best forms of motivation, provided you’re prepared for it.

I once served with a fellow paratrooper whom we called Ice Cube because he loved the cold. Norwegians are, of course, accustomed to frigid conditions, but this guy really seemed to thrive in them. I asked him about this one day and his response was simple. “I’m good at being cold,” he said. For whatever reason, Ice Cube was able to withstand cold temperatures much better than other people. It’s not that it was easy for him. I watched his teeth chatter and his lips turn blue along with everybody else. But he was able to persevere and see through to the other side of the pain. And this became an incredible motivator for him. Every time he overcame the cold, it provided a sense of achievement and recognition.

During Hell Week, I want you to get good at being cold. I fully believe that it’s possible to teach yourself to not just handle adversity, but to truly enjoy it. And through that process, you will build strength and character. It’s a great opportunity that so many people miss because they’ve been conditioned to avoid adversity. Remember, adversity doesn’t equal failure. It equals opportunity. Adversity is part of the journey toward a worthwhile goal.

I learned this lesson the hard way one morning in February 1996. I was still in the military, returning to the base from a twenty-four-hour R and R at my family home. The mountain roads were icy, so I was taking it slowly. Around a sharp bend, a bus filled with tourists heading for a skiing holiday slammed into my tiny Renault. Just before impact, I assumed the position we use in parachuting, pulling my legs halfway under my body, hunching my back and neck, and pushing my underarms together and my fists over my head.

A shrill, metallic sound followed, then the violent force of impact—twice, in fact, as the bus spun around and broadsided me a second time. Then all was silent. I sat still for a few seconds and examined my body, patting my legs, my thighs, my stomach, and my chest. I felt intact. I crawled out of the shattered windshield and shifted into military mode, doing my part to secure the scene and tend to injured tourists. Eventually the emergency services arrived.

A policeman approached me and said they were looking for the passengers of my Renault, and pointed to my crumpled wreck of a car. For the first time, I let myself slip down onto the ground. “I think you should come along to the ambulance,” the police officer said. The adrenaline seeped out of my body, and all at once I felt the pain in my knee, chest, neck, and head.

Fortunately, miraculously, none of my injuries were serious—a couple of bruised ribs, a mild concussion, and a gash on my knee. I was discharged from the hospital, feeling very lucky, except for the crushing pain in my head and neck.

That’s when the real struggle began. The first year after the accident was the toughest of my life. The pain didn’t go away. It stayed with me all day, every day. Though I was able to complete my certification as a paratrooper, the pain eventually forced me to leave the military.

I made the decision to study economics at the Norwegian School of Economics and Business Administration, hoping the rigors of academia might distract me from the pain. One day into lectures and the pain had won. I couldn’t concentrate. Sleep was fitful at best. I lost my girlfriend. I began to despair and feel sorry for myself. I met with all kinds of specialists, from chiropractors to physiotherapists. My depression only grew deeper. I traveled to Sweden, the United States, and Australia to meet with more specialists. Nothing helped. I started to lose faith and think even darker thoughts.

One day my father called to see how I was doing. I told him the truth, putting it all on the table. “It must be challenging,” he said. We talked about this and that, and then he said something unexpected. “Erik, you’re in one of these situations where, as they say, the wheat is separated from the chaff. This is where you get to prove what you’re made of.”

That same day I had a conversation with a minister whom our family had known for years. He, too, asked how I was doing, and again I told the truth. For the second time that day I got a surprising response. “Isn’t it fascinating,” he said.

“Fascinating?” I answered.

“Yes,” he said. “The range of emotion we have inside. It’s fascinating. A human being can feel everything from extreme happiness, love, joy, achievement, and safety to the deepest sadness, fear, and misfortune.”

In the days that followed I reflected on these two conversations. Slowly, I began to see my situation in a different light. The state of adversity I was in was a kind of challenge. My father’s words made me realize that. They got my competitive juices flowing. Would I overcome it or be swallowed whole?

The minister’s words, meanwhile, made me think about the inevitable ups and downs of life. I realized that I was on an incredible high before my accident—thriving in the military, being in love with my girlfriend, and forging lots of friendships. Now I was experiencing the opposite. I was in the downturn, and I actually felt lucky to be there. Life becomes stronger and richer when you can feel the ups and downs, and the bad feelings with the good.

With this new perspective, I began to rally. I countered the adversity with small changes, both physical and mental. I began to build up my strength and my powers of concentration, allowing myself longer breaks and rest periods in the beginning. I was in hell. I just needed to keep going.

I began to like adversity. I wanted to win. It took me eleven years to get through business school. The journey was longer and harder than I thought possible. But when I phoned the exams office to learn my final grade on my master’s thesis, and the woman on the other end of the line said “A,” I burst into tears of happiness.

Today, the experience of my accident and recovery is central to who I am. I wouldn’t have gotten where I am without it. I actually feel lucky to have been through the ordeal, because it allowed me to recognize life’s ups and downs. I know that whenever darkness descends, I can fight my way back into the light.

That’s one of my adversity stories. What are some of yours? That’s the question for you to answer during this stage of your Hell Week preparation. Obviously, you’re not going to go out and seek to create adversity in your life (especially a horrible car wreck). But I do want you to redefine the meaning and role of adversity in your life.

Remember that anyone can perform well when things are going their way. The difference between the best and the rest is their ability to mobilize in the face of hardship. A businessperson might find motivation by performing well in a tough market. For the athlete, it might be playing through an injury.

On the journey toward your goal, whatever it might be, you always have to expect a downturn. It’s essential to have this in mind, because emotions to a large extent are steered by expectations. If you expect your journey to be nothing but fun and games, your emotions will play out differently than if you expect some degree of hardship. And the journey toward your goal will be filled with meaning.

Do this right, and you’ll come to welcome the hard times. You’ll want life not to be easy all the time, because you’ll know that something beautiful is waiting for you at the other end. It could be just a short period of physical training, knowing the rush of endorphins you’ll have afterward. It could be putting in that incredibly hard week at work, knowing the intense feeling of reward it will bring on Friday. Through a full-scale embrace of adversity, you will come to appreciate the fullness of life.
THE ACTION PLAN
Take stock. I always ask my clients to list the ups and downs in their lives. The highs include their proudest accomplishments and happiest moments. The lows might include the loss of a job or the end of a relationship. The point of this exercise is to simply make you recognize the peaks and valleys that are part of life. By accepting that fact, you’ll be less likely to fall into a state of despair and self-pity when bad things happen. Instead, you’ll see them as a simple matter of course and take the steps necessary to move past them.

Look for the lesson. Adversity is an opportunity to grow stronger and learn something new about who you are as a person, but you first need to be able to see the challenges in life as teachable moments. To do so, it helps to recognize the fact that negative states are temporary (as are positive ones). “This, too, shall pass” is the old adage. In that mind-set, you’ll have an easier time analyzing the adversity, understanding how you ended up in the situation, and figuring out what you need to do to get out of it.

Share your pain. Thinking back on my own adversity story, the period following my accident when I was locked in my own head was the darkest. As soon as I confided in my father and minister, the darkness began to lift. Make a list of people you know you can turn to when the going gets tough. Knowing that you have a network and a support system in place will help you prepare for adversity. That’s especially true if your network is filled with positive people. Remember that it’s a two-way street. You need to be there when someone from your support system is dealing with adversity. As you get better at this, you’ll learn to recognize when they’re in that state, which will raise your overall awareness of adversity as a simple fact of life.

Create choices. The best leaders always have at least a plan B, and often a C, D, and E to go with it. Having options is especially important during times of hardship and adversity. You can start by imagining the best possible option, but also think about outcomes that would be tolerable, at least in the short term. You are definitely going to deal with some kind of adversity during Hell Week. As you prepare, think about one possible scenario, and the various choices you’ll give yourself to get out of it.

Forget excuses. If choice is the enemy of fear, as the saying goes, then excuses are one of its staunchest allies. We have a tendency to shut down and ignore our options when faced with challenging situations, and that opens the door for all kinds of excuse making. And excuses have a way of building on one another, accruing into full-fledged denial. You’re faced with a problem. You come up with a list of excuses for why you can’t deal with it. Eventually, you convince yourself that the problem isn’t so bad, when in fact it’s getting bigger all the time. During Hell Week, you will find the courage to banish excuses and confront adversity head-on.

Think about it. Overcoming adversity is a kind of problem solving, and one of the best ways to tackle a problem is to come at it with a clear mind. That involves learning how to get yourself into a calm state where you have full control over your emotions, which is another reason I’m such a big proponent of meditation. I’ll come back to it many times throughout the book, but in the context of adversity, let me just say this: I’ve never known a committed meditator who hadn’t also learned how to embrace adversity. The skills are practically one and the same.

Find the humor. We all know about the power of laughter to lift our spirits. Humor is a great antidote to all kinds of adversity. One technique that I encourage many of my clients to try, especially the hopelessly serious ones, is to skip—I mean the kind of skipping children do when they’re on their way to school. You might skip down the hall or across the parking lot or, if you must, around your office with the door closed. Wherever you do it, I guarantee the act of skipping will bring a smile to your face. That brief moment of levity will empower you to embrace adversity.

Passion Meets Self-Discipline
By Friedarose
Hell Week seems to be written mostly for people who have careers, and that's not a bad thing. But I'm a retired older person with several medical issues, so parts of his program, like staying awake for 41 hours on Thursday (ahem, there are only 24 hours in a day, so I'm not sure how that works, but I'm only halfway through the book and still in the preparation phase), and exercising for an hour each day would be difficult for me. The best part is about pushing your way through your fears, not giving up when it's rough, really rough, calming your anxieties, fake it 'til you make it, and really listening to others. I'm sure I've missed some things. It's not unlike other things I've read, but at the same time it is. I very much enjoyed reading about his life, and reading the accounts of others who've followed his program. I won't do everything (and that's my choice and my own physical limitations), but the incentives, life lessons are what I intend to bring into my own life.

Update: I have finished the book, and changing the rating from 4 to 5 stars. This book is for anyone who is not (and I'm sorry for the cliché, but it fits) doing and being all s/he can be, regardless of whether or not you are a student, working, or retired. There are so many lessons to be learned here, and Mr. Larssen has a unique way of inspiring you to dig in and learn them. I also love the quotes by famous and not so famous, or known and unknown people past and present scattered among each chapter. Even if you don't do Hell Week itself, or you don't do it as he has laid it out, you will gain invaluable information and make you think of the smallest details in an entirely different way. One thing I took to heart was what happens on Sunday of Hell Week: reflecting on your mortality. I have now started my own countdown (I'm 71 and counting down to 90) on my calendar of how many days I believe are left to me. This is not something he has recommended but is a version of what someone he knows has done. This will remind me to get off the couch and live each day.

Helping grow and systain work performace
By Amazon Customer
Uncomplicated motivational strategy to help people work with more sustained energy closer to their peak for longer periods of time. Who wouldn't like to do that? Nothing crazy or extreme or calls for turning life upside down - just a lot of good sound advice, well-presented and with a terrific kick-start strategy. I made multiple to-do's incorporating the recommendations and started implementing several immediately before I finished the book. The cognitive change elements were as or more valuable than the physical demands A productive, self-driven motivational book.

Plowed through this book in a night, it is an easy read. Erik Larssen exemplifies and seems to give a weeklong recipe for lasting change. I have been through military hellweek myself an have experienced much of the effects Larssen is telling us about. I will definitely arrange my own hell week according to Larssens recipe.

Review
Passed first time! I saw this book in many a pair of hands on the revision courses...Concise, detailed completely relevant practice questions. Diagrams simplified and easy to learn (including anatomy!) Amazon reviewer I used this book for my final written FRCA and found it excellent. Its covers commonly occurring SAQ topics, giving ideal answers along with well drawn diagrams to aid revision. The book is recent and up to date with references for each topic to allow further reading. I definitely think this book helped me in my revision and in passing the exam on my first attempt. I would thoroughly recommend purchasing it. Amazon reviewer Unfortunately I bought this book quite late [2 weeks before the exam] but it is the best SAQ book available in my opinion for the final FRCA preparation. Succinct, up to date [with recent guidelines], relevant, very easy to read and good use of diagrams. The anatomy section is also brilliant - a topic I had previously struggled with using other revision aids. I wholeheartedly recommend it and congratulate the authors for such an excellent text.
