About the Author
Bill holds advanced degrees in applied sociology and archival methods. Having worked in this field for over twenty-five years, he has also authored 15 books on the history of AA and 12-step recovery. He worked at the headquarters of Alcoholics Anonymous for five years in New York City. Bill's primary interest is the founding period of AA and the writing of their text in 1939.

An ESSENTIAL book for 12 Step Recovery

This should be a required text for 6th & 7th Step work! This book is very user-friendly and easily comprehended by those who are new to recovery. I truly believe that the instructions contained within the "Big Book" are absolutely essential for recovery. However, I also find it is very deceptive in it's brief and concise explanation of the 6th & 7th steps... as if to suggest they don't need as much attention. Therefore, I have noticed that these two steps are often completed in the time it takes to read the two short paragraphs in the Big Book. Fortunately, there is more instruction and discussion in the "12 & 12", however, the language and metaphor are often quite challenging for those who are new to recovery. That's where this book comes to the rescue! This book walks you through the thought processes of recognizing, identifying and eliminating those defects of character or "shortcomings" which cause us to remain unhappy, unsatisfied and unsuccessful in life. This book provides a fresh and in-depth look at steps 6 & 7 in way that anyone can understand. I have found it to be effective in helping the newcomer to identify the underlying fears with cause the defects of character to activate, so that they may learn the skill of NOT "stepping on the toes of their fellows" and thus, create more harmony in their lives and relationships with others. I highly recommend this book as an essential supplement to the Big Book & 12 & 12 when working steps 6 & 7.

Spiritaulity on the Graduate Level

Bill Wilson referred to AA as a 'Spiritual Kindergarten'. If that is so, then the material in 'Drop The Rock' is for those of us at the Masters or Doctoral level.

This book is NOT for the newcomer. Nor is it for those who are blissfully filling their days by 'not drinking and going to meetings'. 'Drop The Rock' is clearly targeted at those who have been sober for some time, but find there are still persistent annoying life problems that resist the all the work one has put into fixing these flaws.

This book is short, concise and to the point. The authors have left out much of the new-agey recovery jargon and slogans that weighs down most meetings. Instead, they approach Steps 6&7 from a practical and logical perspective which demystifies the two steps on which so much of our future happiness hangs.

It is an excellent book. One which you could build a meeting or study group around. However, the book is not for everyone. 'Drop The Rock' is only for those who know the intense hunger of desiring real change in life.

I am a grateful 12-stepping person. I recognized my need for coaching as I've floundered a bit even with sponsor help. I Googled "6th step" and this was a found treasure. It is good for me as I've been in a program for three years now and able to more honestly take action to heal. I read one review that suggests this book could be a bit too much for a newer 12-stepping person... This may be so. For me I had to come to know myself enough to see I needed such a tool...

And what this book does is provoke a deeper self-awareness. Am I still under the weight of 'rocks' that I cling too and which limit my reaching a new platform of peace in my life? Have I been willing to do my part in changing what I can? Do I expect my HP to do it ALL for me...like remove a limiting habit...yet I embrace it so darn fervently? Can I logically expect my HP to override my will? I need to do my part... And thus goes the 12-stepped baseD discussion of changing myself... Of the classic "3-A's" of awareness, acceptance and action.

I credit this book as a vehicle that is helping me motivate myself to drop the rocks and to BE WILLING to have my HP remove the layers of gnarly sediment that has hidden the buoyant soul...I am suggesting a buyer consider buying too "Fearless Relationships" by Karen Casey as this book motivates and challenges me to think differently and be willing to act-as-if....but Casey's book provides a more 'how-to-do-it'...and reading them combined ( and rereading) has been good.

Excellent! Excellent! Excellent! - It was straight to the point. Based on Biblical writings. I think lesson 2 was the most difficult. My husband and I read the book before introducing the lessons to familiarize our selves with the questions.
As a family we have family devotions daily, so I think that helped a lot. The children are used to open discussions with us after Bible reading. The book brought out a lot of questions. It also opened up the opportunity to speak about rape, inappropriate touch, sex under the covering of marriage and purity.
To be honest we had the delayed the talk for our 13 year old and I think now it was wrong. We should have done this, as it is recommended by the book - start age 6 and go from there. See how much your child knows already.
We monitor everything our children watch and read - and we were surprised just how much they perceive from commercials, magazines at the grocery store stands, friends and cousins.
We did the Talk with our 6,8,11 and 13 year old children. The 6 year old had no difficulty understanding that this is part of God's plan for us.
I think it was more difficult for our 8 year old, she was very upset and said "there is no way you should expect any grandchildren from me! no way!" - we allowed each of our children expressed their opinions, emotions and ask as many questions as they wanted. We took our time with each lesson and even divided them in to two sections.
( By the end of the third lesson, where we explained the beauty, love, joy and God's blessing with scripture our 8 year old had changed her mind about not getting married and having children - she said maybe she would get married after all.)
Our 11 year old and 13 year old just kept saying that it was disgusting and such, but as the lessons progress and they see the beauty of God's plan and creation they were thankful to God for his plan.

We had searched and researched the topic, and how to approach it - read books and articles - but not other book compares to this one. This is the one we chose to introduce our children to the 'Talk' and could not be more content with the results.

Great tool for parents!

I found that having The Talk as a tool was very helpful to me in talking with our daughters about sex and God’s plan for it. The lessons took only about 20 minutes each, depending on the discussion time and I love how Luke uses so much Scripture to back up the points of each lesson. It was comforting to my awkwardness to have a script to guide us through the main points, and I also appreciated that the illustrations and explanations were as discreet as possible while staying true to the clinical definitions. Highly recommend this parent resource.

The Talk clearly defines sex through God's lens using excellent scripture references and discussion questions. It's a must have for any parent.

Sad, unnerving, yet touching and memorable set of short stories

What a sad, unnerving, yet touching and memorable set of short stories. I cant' really say that I am fond of short stories - although I must confess, that as of late, they have been growing on me more and more.

These 14 stories have a common thread - someone or something is missing. It could be the absence of a loved one or the death of a significant other, even the loss of something - in the end someone vanishes and someone is left behind. These are the stories of those who stay, how they live their lives without this person or thing that is missing.

I have to say that Ms. Willis is a very talented writer. Her words were a joy to read. She masterfully grabs you at the start of each story and you will find that you can't stop until that story is over. I found it very unique that we get so much in each story, which you usually don't find in short stories. By giving you details of a characters past and present, you begin to understand them more fully, you get to know them and eventually acknowledge and appreciate their growth throughout their stories. This alone was quite astonishing to me, because although the stories were mostly sad, you feel as if there is some closure in each one. She also captures her characters - whether it be a woman scorned, a friend, a sibling, or even an aging cowboy, young or old - the narrators all seemed true, someone you might know, or even a few of their aspects might be found within you.

Vanishing was a finalist for the Governor General's Literary Award for Fiction. This book is one I'd recommend to lovers of short stories or even better yet, to book clubs, because it is very thought provoking. My final say is, you may relate to one of these stories or, you might relate to none, but in the end, they will stay with you.

An Exploration Of Loss

In the fourteen stories in Vanishing, Deborah Willis explores the ways that we lose people and items that are important to us. Some are vanish through infidelity and some through physical separation, while others vanish through death or even loving outside accepted boundaries. In each case, there is the person who vanishes, and those left behind, who must determine how to move on in their lives without the person who is gone.

The opening story, "Vanishing" is my favorite. In this story, a playwright father and husband leaves his house one day, never to return. The story follows his wife and daughter throughout their lives after this event, outlining the various ways that his disappearance changes their lives, even decades later. The deftness Willis demonstrates in this outline of all the repercussions caused by his decision to leave brings the story close to the reader, and makes them spend time thinking of how their life would change without their loved ones close at hand.

In this first book of fiction, Deborah Willis displays the insight into human decisions that has marked her previous work. She won the PRISM International annual fiction prize. She was long-listed for the Frank O'Connor International Short Story Award and short-listed for the Governor General's Literary Award for Fiction. Her work can also be found in The Bridport Prize Anthology, Event, and Grain. This book is recommended for readers interested in determining how we relate to each other, and what it means when the human connections are broken, either through actions or physical space.

Review of Vanishing and Other Stories

There may have been a little bit of magic in this book.

VANISHING and OTHER STORIES is a collection of short stories written by Deborah Willis. Every story deals with an absence of some sort; a missing father, a dead wife, a lover parted, childhood lost.

The writing in this book is phenomenal. Incredibly beautiful and moving and by the time I finished each short story I felt as if I'd been sucked into some kind of time warp and, in the process of just a few real-time minutes, read a novel of depth, length and substance. From the first sentence of each of these stories I was drawn into a world that needed no building because that sentence gave me a true sense of the history behind the story before it even really began.

This Other Us is one of the stories that seems to catch everyones attention and, while interesting and.. disturbing in its own way, it was Traces that really enraptured me. Focusing a story on senses and thoughts, the thoughts of a woman toward the woman who is usurping her in her husbands affections - and the twist.. oh the twist had me curling my toes and feeling the heat of anger inside of me wanting to erupt.

I'm not usually a fan of short stories (and this is the second collection I've read of them) but this book is a beautiful, perfect example of just how perfect they can be.

The natural way to combat anxiety

John Franz, the author, has taken on relieving anxiety not by over the counter prescription drugs but by many natural remedies, habits and he shows us some tips we can use. He says right off that we can't cure it but we can control this natural reaction to stress.There are actually a lot of solutions but it's up to us to find which work best for us. As the subtitle of the book suggests, there are 5 little known ways to naturally fight this pretty prevalent malady which is increasing due to our lifestyle. He includes everything from herbal tea to essential oils to body butters plus some natural habits we can stack like being grateful, concentrating on one thing at a time to getting enough sleep.

This book deserves five stars (meaning, I love it.)

Well, this book,

- is practical

- shows some methods which I have tried already

- opens up a new world which might have been totally new to many till now

I wouldn't have gone for a book on anxiety claiming natural fighting agents unless I got a hint from the cover.
Some of the methods have proved widely to be very safe and yielding

Ogosh... fantastic recipes and tools and techniques to relieve anxiety and related excess stress, depression, and more...

Great quick yet powerful read that helped me better understand the connections between depression, stress and anxiety and a bunch of terrific, all natural, ways to deal with it. The symptoms of excess anxiety are horrible, decreased immune function and related sickness, more stress, mood swings, an interrupted sleep cycle, and even paranoia, and the natural methods are really useful lifestyle choices. I'm definitely going to try essential oil blends for anxiety and make some of the recipes (for sure the mint and lavender cold iced tea which sounded Divine). I knew hot baths with Epsom salts could be deeply healing, the Ultra Simple Diet by Mark Hyman, M.D. (which I bought here on Amazon) recommends that for each night on his cleanse/diet, but I didn't realize I could make homemade all-natural bath salts and body butter to relieve excess stress and anxiety. Going to keep this book on my Kindle phone app for the recipes, such as the bergamot, lavender, and wild orange bath salt one (love Earl Grey tea so wild to try bergamot in one of the body butter or bath salts recipes from this book). The book also has herbal foot bath recipes. But don't think the book is all about stuff that you have to buy/make to relieve anxiety, the book includes info on meditation and finding humor as ways to control stress and anxiety. I like that the book is short yet info-packed. I'll be re-reading this (and trying a bunch of the recipes and techniques). Happy anxiety relief~*

About the Author
Peter Dicken, PhD, is Emeritus Professor of Economic Geography in the School of Environment and Development at the University of Manchester, United Kingdom. He has held visiting academic appointments at universities and research institutes in Australia, Canada, China, Hong Kong, Mexico, Singapore, Sweden, and the United States, and lectured in many other countries throughout Europe and Asia. He is an Academician of the Social Sciences, is a recipient of the Victoria Medal of the Royal Geographical Society (with the Institute of British Geographers) and of the Centenary Medal of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society, and holds an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Uppsala, Sweden.

Good read, good reference. Buy it, get smarter, the world's in a heap of dung, at least you can gain a little knowledge along the way, probably won't save you, but it's better than video games.

Read this book and you will be better off when reading the business headlines everyday. I have always been a big geography buff, but understanding the economic geography was great fun and illuminating. A must read to know the world we live in.
