Robert B. Denhardt is Professor and Director of Leadership Development in the Sol Price School of Public Policy at the University of Southern California, Regents Professor Emeritus at Arizona State University, and Distinguished Visiting Scholar at the University of Delaware. Concise and Powerful

Denhardt's "Theories of Public Organizations" is a concise overview of public administration theories that have had contributed to the substantive mosaic of the field of public administration. Along a continuum ranging from the early contributors to the contemporary accounts in public administration, including scholars of different epistemological persuasions, Denhardt introduces the readers with mouthwatering fecundity of public administration theory/theories.
Denhardt organizes the book around eight major chapters. In the first chapter, the author persuades the reader of the close connection between theory and practice and argues that theory is derived from practice, therefore, how we acquire knowledge in practice and make sense of what is happening around us is important in theory building in that the way we learn helps us to come up with theories that explain what happened and why happened. In the second chapter, Denhardt discusses the intellectual heritage of Marx, Weber, and, Freud, all of whom concluded that complex organizations have important influences on the development of human faculties, for this reason, Denhardt argues that public administration scholars need focus on human issues when spending intellectual energy on public organizations. In chapter 3, the beginning of public administration theory is discussed with special emphasis to "efficiency" as the primary criterion of success (I strongly recommend Deborah Stone's Policy Paradox!). Chapter 4 discusses the rational model of organization. Chapter 5 is about organizational humanism and New Public Administration. In the sixth chapter, Denhardt talks about the New Public Management movement. In Chapter 7, New Public Service is recounted. The eighth chapter is a summary that emphasizes the intimate connection between theory and practice.
Beginning with targeted quotations from Marx, Freud, and Weber, Denhardt argues that large-scale organizations have significant influence on the lives of human beings, because of which one needs to go beyond a simple-minded view that organization theory is about how to increase productivity, a question that addresses only instrumentally-rational managerial techniques, without any palpable regard to personal learning and growth of individuals that populate complex organizations. Drawing from a broad range of public administration literature and epistemological movements that include interpretive/action theory, critical theory, and postmodernism, Denhardt comes up with a viewpoint that public administration scholars should contribute to a theory of public organization that makes a significant emphasis on personal learning, human values and action, and change in public organizations in pursuit of publicly defined societal goals.
Although the book is a generic one that gives a copious account of contributions to public administration theory, Denhardt accomplishes getting the core of his message across: there is (and should be) an intimate connection between theory building and learning, a point of view that leads Denhardt to conclude that students of public administration should endeavor to understand how individuals acquire knowledge in organizations and make sense of what is happening around them-different ways of acquiring knowledge lead to different learning processes and outputs. This proposition implies that researchers, too, should look back in order to interpret actions (intentions and behavior) of individuals and groups in organizations. As much audacious as it is, this proposition runs in manifest contrast to the positivist myth that scientific research should stay away from such post factum interpretations that adulterate the theoretical precision of scientific knowledge.
There are many interesting propositions in the book, which are difficult to be summarized here. There are a few shortcomings. The chapter on New Public Service could have been a bit more comprehensive. Critical and interpretive theories could have been linked more to public administration (for those interested in these theories, I recommend Richard Bernstein's The Restructuring of Social and Political Theory).
Overall, I highly recommend this book to students of public administration.

The "Apocalypse" of Narnia

The world of Narnia is coming to an end. A false Aslan is abroad in the land, and the people (and beasts) struggle to follow what they think is the truth. Eustace and Jill, from The Silver Chair, are sent to Narnia to help the last king of that land rally his troops for the final battle.

This is the apocalyptic volume of The Chronicles of Narnia. If The Magician's Nephew speaks of a creation reminiscent of the book of Genesis, this book speaks of an end reminiscent of that foretold in the book of Revelation. Here, everything comes to an end, and the entire purpose of the existence of Narnia is finally explained by Aslan. The Christian references are unmistakable. Aslan, like the Biblical Christ in Revelation, triumphantly comes to bring an end to his world and save his people. Most of the material in this book is very Christian-like, all the way down to the separating of the creatures on the right and left hands of Aslan.

This, the final volume of the Chronicles, brings everything to a head. This book provides the so-called meaning of life, and gives validity and value to all of the good deeds the children have been trying to do since the first book. Here, the good have their reward. The descriptions in this book (especially the end) are absolutely beautiful, and the finale is nothing short of moving. Lewis, a master of Christian apology, succeeds here in bringing to life the Christian concept of the end of the world, and of the final rewards of the just. No part of the Chronicles of Narnia would be complete without the vision afforded by this, the final book.

Voyaging

The second volume of the Narnia Chronicles closed with the possibility of Lucy and Edmund -- though not their older siblings -- returning to Narnia. "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" makes good on that story, with the intrepid pair (plus a whiny cousin) returning on a strange sea voyage.

After the events of "Prince Caspian," Lucy and Edmund are sent off to stay with their obnoxious cousin Eustace. But when they admire a picture of a strange ship, suddenly all three kids are sucked in -- and land in a Narnian sea. On board the ship is King Caspian, now fully grown, who is determined to find a bunch of knights exiled by his murderous uncle, even if he has to go to the edge of the world (literally).

Lucy and Edmund are thrilled to be back in Narnia again, but Eustance proceeds to make trouble any way he can, complaining and causing trouble among the crew. But there are problems more horrifying than any of them can guess, from dragons to sinister "gold water" to a region filled with their worst nightmares.

"The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" is one of Lewis's most original and tightly-written Narnian adventures. It's also a bit of a break from form. After two books of battles against evil tyrants, "Voyage" simply goes where no man/woman/mouse has gone before, and gives us a view of the Narnian world as more than one isolated little region.

And in some ways, it's also the darkest Chronicle. Lewis explores the theme of greed here -- greed for power, beauty, money and magic -- and has some scenes both chilling and majestic. But his archly humorous style peeks through in several places, whether it's pompous mouse Reepicheep or tea with a reclusive old wizard.

Edmund and Lucy are their usual plucky selves, albeit a bit more mature than before. But "Voyage" also introduces one of Lewis' most interesting characters in Eustace Clarence Scrubb. Like Edmund, Eustace is initially a peevish, lying boy who generally makes trouble, but slowly learns his errors. But unlike Edmund, Eustace doesn't have to ally himself to the baddie to learn that.

"Voyage of the Dawn Treader" was a turning point for the Narnia Chronicles, as well as the one that began venturing into darker territory. Engaging and tightly written.

questing after the Kingdom

I have put off reviewing "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" for a long time. There is no other book I have so longed to recommend to others, but I have felt (and still feel) totally inadequate when it comes to expressing what a wonderful story this is. I could go on for days about all the wonderful things contained here. That said, I will try and focus on only a few aspects of this book and then plead with you to read it.
First, I must note that I feel this story should be read in the context of the entire Narnian series. It stands on its own nicely enough, but the deep background of the previous tales adds richness and texture to the tale.
Secondly, I must note that this book is highly enjoyable because it works on two levels. The tale as a whole is the story of a journey into unknown lands. With each new place they visit, the whole is broken into wonderful episodes. My favorite episode (with the exception of the ending) is the island where dreams come true...its not what one would expect.
The character of Eustace is my favorite of all the humans in the Narnian books. This story is partly a tale of his transformation. This seems to be a universal human desire; but Eustace, like all who truly seek transformation must, finds impossible to reform himself. This is an especially timely lesson for our "self-help" culture at the beginning of the twenty-first century.
This brings me to what I like best of "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader." Let me preface what I say here by making it clear that no one hates heavy-handed use of allegory as much as I do. However, the allegory that is "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" is one of the greatest things of beauty I have ever encountered.
In one form or another we are all questing after an unseen kingdom. Be it the kingdom of God, Materialism, or simply of the Self--we are all, like Caspian and his pals, on a quest. I don't wish to give away any endings, but let me just say that the greatest truth Lewis expresses in his book is that no one can reach the True Kingdom on their own.
I urge you to read this book. If I could only have a handful of books, this one would definitely be among them. I give "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" my highest recommendation.

Out of kindness I have chosen to rate this a two-star publication. There are a few, very few, useful statements here for traders.

What else would one expect from a person that does not trade? Merely talking with successful traders does not imbue one with trading wisdom.

Like all of Tharp's work, from what I have seen, the title belies the content. That is, little to no worthwhile content, but a captivating title. Anyone that honestly believes themselves to be credible enough to write a trading book that can deliver "Financial Freedom" that has never traded professionally should not be believed. It would be similar to seeking advice from a homeless person about becoming a billionaire.

Another credibility issue for me with this author is that he is now hawking "No Money Down" and "Get Rich in Real Estate" tapes, books, seminars, etc. I would speculate that Tharp would sell widgets, or, at a minimum, books about widgets, if he believed there was money to be made.

I find it impossible to believe this person could ever be a credible source of information about trading! His trading resume consists of ..., well nothing, except the idea of how to make money by writing words on a subject he knows nothing about.

Many more useful, credible books exist that will help in attaining real financial freedom. Brett Steenbarger is a trader and has produced good material on the psychology of trading, and Mark Douglas, even though he does not trade, has produced more interesting and valuable books.

The most useful advice, read books about trading that are written by traders, and read reviews written by people who trade every day.

Why and how to design a successful trading system

Thousands, if not millions, of people waste huge amounts of money and time every year searching for some get-rich-quick Holy Grail of trading. Tharp's somewhat misleadingly titled Trade Your Way to Financial Freedom is definitely not a get-rich-quick technique. Nor is it even a guide to analyzing the markets; there are no fundamental analysis approaches, no technical chart patterns, no quantitative formulae. Instead, Tharp offers something totally different and far more useful: he systematically describes why you should develop your own trading system and how you should go about building and testing it.

Description:

An expert in trading psychology, Tharp quickly covers why most novice traders fail due to psychological problems trading and unrealistic expectations of the market. He advocates that an individual rationally lay out objectives for trading and design their own system, using whatever techniques work best for them, to meet their goals. Tharp goes on to describe the components of a trading system and how to objectively judge between them. He stresses the importance of money management and position sizing; two areas where traders should spend much of their time but often ignore. Just to be clear, there are no trading techniques at all in this book: no technical analysis signals, no material on how to pick stocks or futures, nothing like that - just how to build a system and overcome some of the psychological barriers to successful trading.

Opinion:

As a professional commodities trader, I believe that a thorough reading of Tharp's work will give a novice trader the benefit of years of hard-earned wisdom. It can take years of mistakes and losing money before internalizing the lessons Tharp gives out for a relatively extremely cheap price! It is very important to think about position sizing and money management. It is equally important to have a technique that can be objectively evaluated rather than trading randomly. No matter how you choose to approach the markets, whether by reading technical charts, fundamental reports, or quantitative models, Tharp's advice is excellent.

I was able to identify a key psychological trait that has caused me to consistently lose money in the markets. Plus, it is the best book I've read in terms of positioning (size of position) stop loss placement. I think every trader should read this book as part of their basic preparation for trading.

Great book

Brilliant book, I found the title interesting
It's a great book which helps you become more authentic and understand more about the important things. It describes procrastinating things. It tells you stories about other people experiences which followed their own instinct and were loyal to themselves becoming people of success.
We tend to forget about our essence and try to look like others which make us become regular people and most of the cases unhappy.
This book has just become a night table book, so every night before sleep I can review different points and I can refresh the important points within it. There is too much wise in it.
I do recommend it specially if you have some points in your life which you don't like but you can identify what's going wrong.. this book will make you get things clear and it will help you in changing them.

lm feeling really identified with this book, l travelled for 6 months and was funny because l totally agree when the author says about getting a job related to it, its funny because when you do or try to do your best and enjoy life everything looks better and take in place.

For some time l have the feeling that lm not doing enough things for my future but as the tittle says unleash your talent and change your life. Of course l will plan to do a blog or a short book about my adventures because is something that l love.

lt could be that when we get older we care about more thnings than before, right now its so difficult to just stop and begin again with your life. But l liked the way believes about childhood and also dreams.

The way we accomplish this is by delivering our best through using our gifts and strengths. However using our talent in the right channel is very important or the same gift can become a curse.

Awesome market calls, great prose, suspect argumentation

Two confessions first:

1. I've owned the old book since 2006, I looked at it briefly and there was no way I was paying good money to get an extra 50 pages, so the review is actually based on The Empire of Debt. Regardless, I'm rather confident my insights are relevant, for reasons that will hopefully become apparent.

2. I totally loved reading it. I could not put it down. I even went back to re-read some passages, often going on to re-read entire pages or chapters.

Now, for the review proper.

The executive summary is that the authors made a truly amazing set of market calls when this was published in 2005: Sell stocks, sell housing, buy gold. Indeed, "buy gold" are the last two words of the book. At the same time, they based these market calls on a series of hunches and prejudices that it is very difficult for a sensible, educated man to agree with. And the thesis of the book, that the US is an empire in reverse, is preposterous.

But it is so unbelievably funny to read, you kind of wish they were right.

I come from a country that was twice saved by America. Once from the Nazis and soon after that from communism. My parents are to this day unbelievably grateful for this. They paid for me to go study in America, in the process returning a small part of the favor by sending hundreds of thousands of dollars to fund solid American jobs of the kind the authors like, albeit at an institution they probably despise. I can't square this with the authors' vitriol against American intervention in Europe. As a human being, Wilson may have been as bad as they make him sound, possibly FDR too. But the debt these presidents issued to fund these wars is probably a footnote compared to the benefits, pecuniary and otherwise. Would not know where to start with the math, but that's my hunch and I don't feel any more obliged to defend it than the authors do theirs.

Also, from my time spent in America the impression I gathered was of a people that is prepared to make material concessions if there is a principle at stake. Sometimes it can by misguided or beside the point (I don't much care for guns myself, and where I was brought up history says they had no compunctions about tossing malformed babies off a cliff, let alone worry about unborn foetuses) but it's just how it is. So I remain to be convinced George W Bush was an imperialist. Especially as we all know he's an imbecile with strong principles. That'll do it every time.

Equally, the authors treat all debt as one thing. While it can't be denied that there's a level of debt that's too high, it can no more be denied that a bit of debt does grease the wheels of an economy. The authors get unbelievably annoyed and aggrieved about an issue that may have been evident to them because of their market experience or because of their personal prejudices, but who is to know? Also, they do not mention anywhere that the big bucks were in the fees charged for all the lending, not so much in the house appreciation itself. It could be (we'll never find out) that if all the lending had been priced right the party could have carried on for a long time. And maybe not, of course. But people who have studied what happened with the Lloyd's insurance market some twenty years ago have come precisely to that conclusion. It wasn't hurricane Andrew that killed the Lloyds "names," it was the layers upon layers of fees. So it could one day transpire that the US economy can indeed support amounts of debt the authors find disastrous, if we bother to keep record of who lent what to whom, if we give prime loans to people who can afford them rather than trick them into subprime, if we suppress valuation fraud, if we don't take a slice of juice after every repackaging and so on. Maybe one day it will.

Anyway, little point in trying to refute every idea in the book, especially since I'm saying I loved reading it.

So, for example, there's a six page section where they tear into Thomas Friedman who writes for the NYT. God, do I wish I'd written that myself. And how unbelievably brave to publish this book in 2005. And what fantastic prose.

So where I'm left with this book is that first and foremost it entertained me, but it also exposed me to a series of arguments on which I could develop my own, less strident, views and counterviews. Pretty much what I'd expect from a good book.

But it's so one-sided and absolutist and, frankly, insular in the arguments it makes, that you can hardly say it's great book.

A Crumbling Financial Empire?

Authors William Bonner and Addison Wiggin, a couple of economic iconoclasts, have compiled a chilling perspective of a crumbling American financial empire; whose irrational economic policy over the years has created huge buget deficits that defy logic; sooner or later, the bubble is going to burst, and this country is in for an economic disaster of epic proportions.

It's not going to be a pretty picture.

The problem began in the post-Reagan years, when any sort of prudent fiscal policy seemed to become a distant memory. Perhaps the greed & hubris of big government is creating an unrealistic perception that creating an unfathomable budget deficit really won't hurt the economy; just keep borrowing. That's no way to run a business and certainly no way to run a country; except to run it into the ground, financially.

We've become a bailout nation, with little regard for any financial common sense. The Stimulis Package is an ill-conceived plan that is going to be ensuring our long term financial devastation, which our children's children will be still paying off, well into their golden years of retirement. Retirement? What's that?

The message delivered by Bonner and Wiggin is startlingly clear; this country is heading down the primrose path of socialism and it's a cost we won't be able to afford. We're crumbling under a mountain of debt, and the inevitable landslide will prove to be catastrophic, unless our fiscal policy is changed; very soon. We don't have much time to waste; our nation's financial future is on very thin ice.
