Excellent for ACLS and PALS ECG strip review!

Excellent for ACLS and PALS ECG strip review! I used this book to pass my ACLS and PALS. The book is divided into sections: Anatomy of the Heart, Conduction of the Heart, ECG Measurement, Lead Placement, Rhythm Analysis, and Rhythm Strip Interpretation. It has a section on what drugs to give for each cardiac condition. It also has Appendix Algorithms consisting of: Adult BLS Healthcare Provider, Cardiac Arrest, Bradycardia with a pulse, Tachycardia with a pulse, Acute Coronary Syndromes, and Suspected Stroke. I reviewed the ECG strips in this book prior to taking the ACLS and PALS course. I highly recommend reading this book prior to taking ACLS and PALS. So Glad I had it!

About the Author

William Golding (1911–93) was born in Cornwall, England. His first novel, Lord of the Flies, was published in 1954 and became an international bestseller. In 1983, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.

The author, what can one say that hasn't already been said? I will read the trilogy, after having watched the on screen adaptation starring Cumberpatch.

Brilliant evocation of sea journey to Australia 1800s

I can't recall another first person narrative that is so effective in giving (apparent) authentic voice to a character as that given by Mr Golding to the young aristocrat Mr Edmund Talbot and how revealing that is of the times, the class system, dress, morality, habits, and so on, on a long sea voyage. Details of the ship itself, the characters that people it, and the events that occasion it on its journey, are masterfully drawn (so that's where - some of us - came from!) I also laughed out loud as it is richly comic as well (Dickens would have laughed out loud too I bet!) not least in the circumlocutions used by the narrator. A journey for him in a number of senses. Also one of the funniest lovemaking scenes I can recall ever having read. A joy of a novel.

Stands on its own effortlessly . . .

It's the tail end of the Napoleonic wars and a superannuated warship makes its way very, very slowly from England to Australia. Among the passengers are Mr. Edmund Talbot, aristocrat, headed for a term as assistant to the Governor, thanks to the influence of his patron and godfather. He keeps a journal for the latter's eventual entertainment and we are treated to his stumbling attempts to understand the nautical world. Still, he's a gentleman and that smooths his way. He has various small adventures, social and amorous, all of it lighthearted to the reader. then we meet the Rev. Mr. Colley, newly frocked and headed for his first congregation, and a very different sort of personality from Talbot, not to mention the ship's officers and men. And from there the story begins a slide into a much darker place, culminating in the "rite" of Crossing the Line, when Mr. Colley is humiliated once too often, and subsequent events result in a funeral at sea. Golding has absolute control of his subject and his characters, sucking you into a consideration of the nature of Justice, and of the division between the social orders. This is not at all a "fun" book, but it's a very affecting one.

Fluidity found atlast in bound Indian mythology!

When I first read the name "Shikhandi", I was like 'oh what kind of a name is that?' I had read author's editorial published in TOI when Sec 377 was reimposed by Supreme Court throwing the ball into parliament, as I guess the judge knew he would be evaporated as the conditions were in favourable of tyrant non secular political party. So, its better to save your own hide than worry about others, isn't it?

Anyways, I got the main reason why Bhisma lay on the bed of arrows, which was never shown in any Mahabharat series played on TV nor in any story telling sessions by grandparents or temples. But the best part of the book is the starting poem. It is brilliant.

Rest of the stories (if you tend to believe Ramayana, Mahabharat, Krishna, etc. you need to believe these stories too... ) speak more about gender fluidity, neutrality and most important is it can gently bring you to the understanding that gender is something what you feel and think, something in your mind, while your body might be of any shape and sex.

These stories also puts forth about kind of sex a human can have due to being born a human. Its refreshing to read fluidity in the current stagnant and moulded society.

One suggestion to penguin people: Please proofread! Even if its written by Indian author on a controversial subject, don't just shrug off your responsibility to 'spell check' for spelling mistakes. There are quite a lot spelling mistakes for e.g. 'from' is converted to 'Prom'.

Delving deep into Indian mythology with simple narrative yet thought-provoking enough...

As a mythology expert Pattanaik surely delves deep into the roots of Indian mythology. And his role as a storyteller sits apt with all the tales told in a smooth tone without any exaggeration. If you live with an attitude that anything and everything is possible in this world then this book is definitely for you. And the best part is the narrative is merely that of storytelling devoid of any challenging tone yet you can actually feel the challenge being already imposed on the more "proper" and "digested" versions of the same tale that we have been taught so far. The book really makes me wonder why LGBT community in present have to fight for their rights at all since they were already a part of our "grand" civilization since its very conception!!

Challenging the myths...

Shikhandi And Other Tales They Don’t Tell You�is not perhaps the best work of Devdutt Pattanaik, but it indeed is a masterpiece, most suited for academic reading. While in the first part of the book, the author cites references to homosexuality and non-heteronormative examples from world mythology, in the second part he devotes completely in the analysis of Indian scriptures.
Shikhandi and Other Tales They don’t Tell You is the collection of stories from Mahabharata, Ramayana, Puranas and other religious texts. Devdutt Pattanaik presents these tales of “queerness” from a cultural context. One must not forget, Devdutt has earlier penned a book called ‘The Pregnant King’ which in itself was a testimony of inherent flow of “queerness” in Indian culture.
The book comes at an important juncture when the LGBT community in India is facing another struggle for the right to dignity. Thanks to the infamous Supreme Court ruling on 11.12.13, the queer community has overnight become criminals in their own country. Devdutt Pattanaik single-handedly demolishes the rhetoric by the Indian moral police in the name of culture, through his writing.
However, my major complain about each of the 30 stories in the collection is that, each of these stories are narrated as if they are isolated incidents and are stripped of any context. The stories deserved a comprehensive approach, and they are dealt rather hastily and read like 100 Word Fiction – exclusively made for mobile apps.
Sometimes, the foot notes at the end of the stories are longer than the actual stories themselves. Although, brevity is a much admired trait in an author, a bit of perspective does not hurt much, especially when dealing with sensitive topics such as the presence of LGBT in Indian Mythology.
What works in its favor are the references and bibliography of each of the stories neatly laid out at the end of the story, which makes the readers comfortable and the objectivity of Pattnaik, gained only through adequate research, helps in understanding the stories without any obvious agenda. The pictorial illustrations are always a pleasure with Pattnaik’ s works and this book is no exception.�
Shikhandi is a well of knowledge and is a must read for everyone interested in Hindu mythology, but ultimately comes across as an opportunity not explored to its fullest potential, considering Pattnaik’ s caliber. It should also be commended for it aims to celebrate the diversity and the vastness of Hindu mythology, and not to challenge any existing faiths or make petty controversies out of the eccentricities or the “Queerness” pervading our epics.
