Well-written accounts of mathematicians lives and contributions to mathematics. We cross-reference the stories with history lessons, so that they are timely. We homeschool, so for us this is easily possible. I'm sure any child interested in the field of mathematics would enjoy these.

I've so enjoyed reading these! I bought this to eventually read with our kids, but I think they're a little young still to appreciate it. Very interesting short biographies, and well written. I love being able to see the development of mathematics over time!

Well done, appropriate for middle schoolers

The selections are written in lightly fictionalized story form, which disappointed me somewhat. I really wanted to buy a book of biographies written for kids. However, the stories are clear, enjoyable and appropriate for the audience: my sixth grade math class. I plan to read these stories out loud to them over the course of the year.

The book includes a section with additional references, as well as a list of relevant topics to match each mathematician's story.

These aren't true biographies; there is interesting and relevant information, but you or your students might be motivated to investigate farther. I bought a couple of biographical books, as well, but they weren't appropriate for kids. Will combine them for a more complete story.

A Menage Christmas Read

What makes romantic Christmas stories better? Revisiting favorite characters from previous books. DL did an absolute wonderful job bringing back old friends and memories from both Second Chances and Second Nature. This novella hits just the right spot. No pun intended. Really. Seeing the twins, Matt and Mason, Grey, and their Claira brought back fond memories from over a year ago when Second Chances was first released. Note: If you have not read Second Chances, you better one-click that sucker before you decide to pick this baby up!

DL never fails me, and this story was just proof of her talent as an author. No matter how long ago her first two books of the When Seconds Count collection were written, she still manages to write her characters exactly as fans of the books remember them. It's a sweet, loving story with great portrayal of each characters' development from when we last read of them. You will be exposed to sexy role-play, mind-blowing sex, a crying woman, and a. . . horse tranquilizer?

Second Christmas is a definite must-read for DL fans who would lie to see what their favorite characters are up to. We get an inside look into Thalia's and Grant's relationship since Second Nature and the McLendon family join in on all the fun. There's a little bit of drama, a good amount of laughter, and great sex. So, go on and click this bad boy and make this Christmas a memorable one! 5 STARS DL, and a standing ovation.

Second Christmas is a wonderful continuation of Second Chances. D.L. does an amazing job pulling you into her story and keeping you there. You will cry, you will definitely laugh, and undoubtedly swoon over these sexy hot cowboys;)

July Cumming has what it takes to entertain you.

First off. I love this cover.

~Spoilers Ahead~

It thrills me to no end that Blake didn't take Sammie's virginity. I did a f***ing fist pump in the air when Tom got her first. That sex scene... I'll be honest. I was hoping for more. By that I mean, I wish Sammie could have known from the beginning that it was her dad f***ing her brains out. But, what saved me from hating that sex scene was Sammie finding out near the end, Blake pounding angrily on the door, and Becky knowing the truth of it all. Becky by the way, despite being the worst friend ever, seriously needs her own trilogy. That chick is kinky as f***.

The story as a whole was hot, and flowed well. It did not disappoint in the slightest. The sex, blowjobs, the masturbation, and the moneyshots were all vividly written. The author truly does have that rare talent to put you in the moment. I ducked when Sammie squirted. I swear. ;)

For the third book in the series everything was fresh and felt new. You want that in a story. You don't want to read the same ole s***. That gets boring. None of this story was boring, and it was equally as hot as the authors other stories.

Speaking of her other stories... I've literally read them all. Let me explain something to you. I'm spoiled as hell when it comes to the books I've read. So I'm hard to please. And when I read something I don't like, I don't give it to chapter three to shape itself up. I shut it down if the first page doesn't please me and then I leave a constructive bad review. I don't need to pretend to like something, nor do I want to because as a writer, and a voracious reader, I have a love for spreading joy through the written word, whether it's mine or someone else's. So it really gives me joy to be able to review good books, because I hate bringing bad books to your attention.

In saying that, all of July Cumming's books have been great. Trust me... you're reading a blog of someone who has been spoiled by the likes of George R. R. Martin, J.K. Rowling, Stieg Larsson, P.N. Elrod, and in the erotica genere, Lexi Maxxwell herself. They've spoiled me rotten. Brought me so much joy. Is July as good as these authors... no, but few people are, and she's one of those who in time, will be. Not can. Will be. So truly, if I say July Cumming has what it takes to entertain you... then she does. Personally I'd love to see what she can do outside the erotica genre. I think she has the chops to do anything and everything she wants.

I'm a fan. And I can't wait to read what July comes out with next.

Science writer Emsley (Cambridge Univ.) and physician Fell (Director of the Oxford Allergy Center) define food allergy as the immune systems reaction to either a particular food (usually a form of protein such as eggs or peanuts) or an environmental agent that is out of proportion to the amount of the substance ingested. Intolerance, on the other hand, ``is caused by the body's inability to detoxify certain components in food''there is no immune system involvement, just a substance ingested that acts like a poison. Some intolerances are to a nutrient like lactose that an individual lacks the enzyme to process, some to non-nutrients such as sulfites or MSG (these latter occurring either as part of processing, or by contamination). Although the focus throughout is on presenting sound scientific information, Emsley and Fell organize their material in a way that makes it possible to sort out a possible food sensitivity: The common culprits are toxins, biogenic amines, salicylates, caffeine, sulfur dioxide and sulfites, and the big one, alcohol (``moderately poisonous, but such is the pleasure derived from drinking it'' that we ignore the facts and suffer the consequences). BEST INFO I'VE FOUND ON SALICYLATES SENSITIVITY

I have a sensitivity to salicylates - aspirin and certain foods. After discovering this fact two to three weeks ago, I have done a lot of research to determine what I should eat and what I should avoid. This book contains the best info I have found to help me in this regard. There is an entire chapter on Salicylates and rather than just a list of foods considered Safe, Low, High, etc., this book has a 2-page Reference Table with salicylate content of foods per 100 g, typical portion, and salicylate intake in mg. There is also a Table listing Foods containing no salicylates.

This book presents a very informative introduction to foods that make people sick. The authors, a university chemistry professor and an allergist MD are quite knowledgeable. They present the mainstream scientific research on food intolerance in a way that is easy to comprehend for the general reader. Dr. Emsley's interest in chemistry is evident throughout the book as he explains the biochemistry of what happens to the food we put in our bodies as well as the chemistry behind food intolerance symptoms.
Emsley and Fell are very clear on what is a food allergy and what is not. They explain that a person is properly said to have an allergy to food only if his or her immune system is involved in a negative response, and that true food allergies are not very common. On the other hand, many other people, perhaps as many as 20%, are intolerant of certain foods. According to the authors, this intolerance is because they lack the ability to break down the food into usable chemical substances. Food intolerance can cause many of the same symptoms as food allergies, but it is also implicated in such problems as headaches or mood disorders; in rare occasions, food intolerance attacks can even be fatal.
With their definition of food intolerance as any situation where the body is overwhelmed by the chemicals in what has been consumed, the authors go beyond standard "problem foods" identified in other books on the topic (such as biogenic amines, salicylates, and sulfites). For example, they discuss how alcohol is broken down chemically in the body, and the chemistry behind drunkenness and hangovers. They also discuss the toxins involved in food poisoning, a very extreme type of intolerance reaction that everyone is susceptible to.
Overall, I found this book highly informative, much more so than books that lump all food problems into the allergy category. The book includes a brief guide to nutrition and food for a healthy lifestyle, but these sections seem almost an afterthought. The book doesn't include a special diet or treatment plan. Instead, its main strength is the scientific explanations of what happens in a food intolerance attack. I think it will go a long way towards helping me understand why I can nibble some foods, but not indulge freely. In general, it's great for patient information, but MDs and naturopaths may also find much of interest.

A well done new translation of a classic

I bought the original first English translation many decades ago, title was "The Art of the (sic!) Checkmate" and the notation was the dreaded descriptive notation.

The translation from French (which I did not speak at that time) was awful, but being an Italian it was easily understood.

And the position and the moves speak for themselves, compare with the Russian books of that time, with a cyrillic font, and German books in gothic ...

This new edition is very well done, notation is algebraic, the original introduction is still valid, the explanation of Legal's mate is the best I ever saw, the mate patterns, you must learn them all. I am not in a position to judge the translation, but consider that the original French edition is still praised, and I repeat, the mate patterns, you must know them all.

I bought some books from Amazon but none of them satisfied me. Until I bought the art of checkmate

I have played chess for a long time but I knew I did not know how to play. I have done many things in life and I taught myself how to do them. For example, one day I went to the sea and nobody was around, so I jumped in and swam. And ever since that day I have been swimming but I know I do not know how. Then I went driving. I needed to go to work. So, I bought a car and there I went. Until today. Once I found myself in another country and yes, I walked into the street and I listened to the people talking and I started to talk using the same words I heard and until today the people think I went school for that language. Many times we are obligated to do something because of the circumstances but we do not know the structure of what we are doing.

One day I found myself in Odessa, in Ukraine ( thiis was before the war ) and I played the most respected chess player in the city. I knew I could not hold long. Maybe one or two minutes, but I did it for the pleasure of it. Lo and behold! He made a mistake because he was in a hurry to beat me. He put the knight in front of the king and the king was in the middle with no defense. I could not believe it. I massacred him. But I knew I did not know how to play. It was luck, I suppose.

But then I started to think that it was high time for me to really learn. I might go to Moscow for the in 2018 and find real grand masters or international somebodys. I bought some books from Amazon but none of them satisfied me. Until I bought the art of checkmate. Then the whole thing started to open up in my mind. It was fantastic and it made sense! Oh,yes. That is it. I was blind and now I see. I saw the structure which before I could not even imagine and now I feel I understand the game. Of course, I have a few details to work out and then I am ready.

In The First Civil Right, Naomi Murakawa inverts the conventional wisdom by arguing that the expansion of the federal carceral state-a system that disproportionately imprisons blacks and Latinos-was, in fact, rooted in the civil-rights liberalism of the 1940s and early 1960s, not in the period after.

Murakawa traces the development of the modern American prison system through several presidencies, both Republican and Democrat. Responding to calls to end the lawlessness and violence against blacks at the state and local levels, the Truman administration expanded the scope of what was previously a weak federal system. Later administrations from Johnson to Clinton expanded the federal presence even more. A Must Read Given Current Events

A clear, compelling and deeply researched work, Murakawa complicates the widely-believed understanding that the expansion of the carceral state was the result of conservative appeals to law and order when in fact it was a bipartisan endeavor whose foundations were laid by liberals. She shows, quite convincingly, how American fears of black people were leveraged by politicians to expand a prison industrial complex that exists, increasingly, simply for its own sake. I look forward to reading the scholarship it hopefully inspires.

Anyone interested in mass incarceration needs to read this book. Before this book was published, I heard Prof. Murakawa give a talk based on it and that talk is still one of the most electrifying talks I have ever heard. Her argument in the book is one that we seem to have to keep on learning: that well-intentioned liberals are a part of the problem. This book is a warning that our current focus on improving criminal justice administration through liberal reform is misguided and only bound to make criminal justice seemingly legitimate but still racially deadly.The chapter on Truman, chapter 2, remakes our understanding of law and order politics and places responsibility squarely on the shoulders of liberals and the national democratic party by revealing the failure of liberal form.
