The success of Rhonda Byrne's self-help manual The Secret, while undoubtedly noteworthy, is somewhat baffling considering that the subject matter is nothing more then the age old "Law of Attraction". Byrne has taken an idea as old as any alchemical school of thought and turned it into a mantra to make a quick buck and lose weight fast. In Secret Source: The Law of Attraction Is One of Seven Ancient Hermetic Laws: Here Are the Other Six authors Maja D'aoust and Adam Parfrey break down the ancient Hermetic teachings that have led to the recent outbreak of self-help ideas and schools of New Thought that are taking over the gullible masses.

The Law of Attraction seems to be the most popular of the Hermetic laws but it isn't the only one. The belief system behind these laws goes back thousands of years and has been studied, and expanded upon, by some of the greatest philosophical minds of the ages. The authors break down each law in turn, explaining its significance and how it interrelates to the other laws. They also go into great detail about the volumes that inspired so much of the ideas, such as The Emerald Tablet and The Kybalion. The reader is introduced to not only the minds that gave birth to these ideas but those that carried it into the various New Thought movements.

Though the subject matter is at times a little deep and the philosophies can be somewhat esoteric, the authors have done a good job of laying everything out in terms that are understandable without being dumbed-down. They strip the "secret" out of The Secret and show that the Law of Attraction isn't something that should be trifled with for greedy personal gain. This was very interesting...

For the most part, they made me forget all about Rhonda Byrne, which was not really hard, even though I'm currently reading her latest book.

Essentially what the author did here was provide a history of the New Thought movement, which is pretty much where Rhonda Byrne is cribbing her stuff from. So I had a good time immersing myself in a side of esoteric thought that I wasn't as well versed in.

Then at the end, they brought it all back around again, and asked the question: Even if you believe this stuff (which I do), is it really a good thing if you actually *get* everything you want? What about people that want bad stuff?

This book provided a reminder that while you're busy asking the Universe for *stuff*, the best thing you can ask for, the thing you should probably ask for first, is wisdom.

Good for the novice

We utilized this text for a graduate level course. I found it to be well worded and a good introductory text. I do not have much experience with other books on this subject, so it is hard to make fair comparisons. The authors are competent in describing the lessons and present seemingly plausible case scenarios.

This book does not wish to salvage the emancipatory promises of European discourse, but considers the more difficult and uncomfortable question of why emancipatory movements represented the struggles of anticolonial and radical blackness the way they did.

Very Best Book for its Purpose - Prerequisites Recommended

Speaking from the view of an electronics technician who later became an educator (BS in Secondary Ed - U of TN 1980), I believe it accomplishes its purpose for being published (>90%)! Knowing there are no perfect books or authors and one book can not teach you everything about such a complex technical subject, The Electronics of Radio is a very well written and orgainized book.

However, having built one of the ORIGINAL NorCal 40 transceivers kitted by the Northern California QRP Club (years before the book was written), and having used this radio to make hundreds of contacts across the US and Canada as KD4ZPA & KS4RT, I would recommend the following books be read first!

Basic Radio: Understanding the Key Building Blocks by Joel R. Hallas and published by the ARRL.

Basic Radio describes radio theory in a much simpler, non engineering, manner. Its first few pages gives the background for basic communications almost 200 years ago and without boring the reader continues to give good examples, diagrams, and illustrations as radio communications progressed through the years up to today's modern digital communications equipment.

For a more in depth study of basic electronics, I recommend,

electronics DeMYSTiFieD by Stan Gibilisco and pubished by McGraw Hill.

Both of these authors are college teachers (Professors), but do a very good job of making what could be boring reading at times, very interesting and engaging. Very little higher level math is required, but both books teach the same concepts in a more easily understood manner than is possible through a book like, The Electronics of Radio. Either or both of these books will make understanding The Electronics of Radio easier!

If you're a build-it-yourself amateur radio hobbyist with a thirst for information about how it all works, this book should be on your shelf. It is somewhat less math-intensive than Wes Hayward's classic, _Introduction to RF Circuit Design_, but more practical than most other books I've seen on the subject. The book approaches the the topic by taking the reader step-by-step through the inner workings of the NorCal 40A, a popular QRP (low-power) HF transceiver kit, which means that you'll get the most from the book if you also have the kit (or a completed NorCal 40A). The author presents each section of the radio's design and discusses each in detail, with many circuit examples. The author discusses the pertinent radio or electronics theory in the context of how each part of the radio works. There are also many practical exercises and tests that the reader can perform on the radio, either as it is being built or after it is finished. Having a NorCal 40A isn't a requirement, and most of the book is useful, even apart from the kit construction, since many of the exercises and test procedures can be applied to other radio circuits with little trouble. The book is organized to make it very useful as a college-level engineering text, but the hobbyist shouldn't be scared off by the math and theory. All in all, this is a great new book for the amateur radio community.
