A very constructive, helpful read!

This is an excellent book for the beginning archer as well as a helpful reminder for the more experienced. It will lead you through selecting the right equipment, understanding and tuning it correctly and suggest a sequence of practice exercises which will lead you to the level of performance you are capable of. The last chapters suggest simulated hunting exercises which will prove very helpful for those wishing to move from targets to game. Like the suggestions for improving accuracy on targets, these simulated hunting exercises will improve your hunting experiences. I appreciate the way the author presents every aspect in a positive, helpful manner. A very good read!

I think this is the best book on instinctive archery

I think this is the best book on instinctive archery. I also have Fred Asbell's latest book -Advanced Instinctive Shooting
For Bowhunting, and it is also very good. I would suggest reading Mr. Asbell's book first, then get this book and follow it's very practical 3 step program. There are a few differences between the two authors. Fred uses a more open stance, and mentions using your dominant eye, while Kidwell believes eye dominance does not matter. If I could have only one book on instinctive archery this would be the one. Those wishing to learn "Gap shooting" would be better off getting Byron Ferguson's book, Be The Arrow. Kidwell's book is about true instinctive shooting.
Another great source of info are Jeff Kavanagh's Youtube videos. They compliment this book perfectly.

Must-read book for anyone learning instinctive shooting with traditional archery equipment

Great book! It is a short and quick read, but I think it will be very beneficial to me, since I am new to instinctive archery, although I have been shooting with a compound bow and sights for years.

The author is apparently a psychology professor, and has a very keen awareness of how our conscious and subconscious mind learn. At any rate, the material was presented in a clear and easy to understand manner, and everything he suggests sounds very plausible.

This book is definitely worth reading, and I suspect that even a more experienced archer could learn a thing or two. For example, this book has probably the best explanation for "target panic" that I have ever read, and his suggestions for curing it make perfect sense.

Excellent textbook for review, but this is not a first course.

In the author's preface, he states that the prerequisites are "one semester of advanced calculus or real analysis at the undergraduate level". So, this book cannot be judged as an 'intro to real analysis'.

I just want to comment on how I have experienced this book. Let me mention that I am using this for self-study after completing a course using Rudin's Principles of Mathematical Analysis (we covered every chapter except Ch. 10 on integration in R^n). I picked this up to review analysis with the goal of covering function spaces and measure theory with more emphasis that Rudin. This book does just that! But, I also wanted a book that stays in R for the Lebesgue measure. Having read the first 3 chapters of Folland, I didn't really think I 'understood' the material even though I could do the exercises (but not without a lot of sweat and coffee). (At one point I felt I became a function: [input] facts, assumptions then [output] proofs, ie hw exercises.) Folland does everything for abstract measures and treats the Lebesgue measure as a corollary.

Having said that, this books hits the spot.

A previous reviewer said this book was informal, unprofessional, and chatty. I do agree with him on that the book is very informal in the exposition and is chatty. I feel that this might be very distracting for those who do not wish to be specialists in analysis, or to those who are seeing analysis for the first time. However, for someone who has finished, say Baby Rudin, this book IS AMAZING. His chatty 'foreshadowing' is the best part, since by now you are trying to see the 'big picture'. In this respect, the chattiness tells of the shortcomings of the previous theory and points one to the right questions to ask.

I think this book shines for the purpose of an intermediate course between Baby Rudin and graduate real analysis ala Folland. As such, the exercises are at the perfect level and include standard, important, and interesting results and extensions. I don't think this book is rigorous enough for a real course at the graduate level, however.

A final note, the editorial (why?)'s placed throughout do get annoying but I feel they make sure you do not take results for granted, an all too common habit when reading advanced math.

I highly recommend this text, especially for self-study.
This book is like taking a course one who loves the subject and knows it very well.
And what is more, she wants to communicate her knowledge to you.
She has anticipated your difficulties and is prepared to guide you.
The material is well motivated; the historical asides help you understand and appreciate the material even more.
There are a lot good exercises.
One caveat is that analysis is on R not R^n.
The material is pitched at the senior level.
I wish I had this book when I was studying this subject.

Ford directed his first film in 1917, his last in 1965. Although many of his best-known movies re-create the mythos of the Old West, he directed enduring classics in other genres. Gallagher believes Ford's oeuvre can be placed in four "ages": introspection, idealism, myth, and mortality. These may mirror Ford's personal evolution, but he was an extremely private, complex man, so correlations are uncertain. Still, Gallagher has deftly interwoven detailed interpretations of Ford's major works with knowledgeable analysis of the man. There is also discussion of film theory in order to place Ford in the proper framework. Many books have been done on Ford (by Andrew Sarris, Peter Bogdanovich, et al.), but this is definitive and possibly one of the best of its kind. Highly recommended. John Ford: A Brilliant Film Director whose Dark Glasses hid Poetic Eyes

T. Gallagher has written an outstanding book on the films of John Ford from his primitive Westerns of the silent era through his last film "7 Women" in 1965.

Gallagher includes biographical information on the enigmatic Mr. Ford-tough guy; closet intellectual; painter of superb movie landscapes and all around genius!

Gallagher's main focus, however, is a close study of all the John Ford movies. His commentary is to be read slowly (a dictionary to look up the abstruse words he likes to use can also prove handy!). Gallagher's writing is often academic (using big words and jargon of film scholars), pedantic and obscure.

However, overall he does a good job at getting at the essence of a film's worth. Gallagher helps you to "read a Ford film" giving you new insights into the neglected genius of the fiery Irishman who made the best American movies of his time.

If you want a biography of John Ford turn to the excellent biographies by Joseph McBride or Scott Eyman among others. If you

want primarily a scholary study of the movies made by Ford then

Gallagher is for you.

If one is searching for a biography of John Ford, this is not the book. (A suggestion--Scott Eyman's "Print the Legend" Another, with a slightly different emphasis but still with insightful observations--"John Wayne's America" by Garry Wills.) But as an analysis of specific Ford films as well as the themes he used throughout his career, this book is invaluable. Gallagher's style is a bit too academic at times, but he offers some interesting observations (His examination of the structure of "The Searchers" is particularly memorable).

I don't think customer Lee Kane is quite right when he says that Tag Gallagher's labour-of-love book is mainly about the films. Gallagher's writing is spare and lean but he gives at least as much biography as the purely biographical books.

My Brain Is Hanging Upside Down is Heatley's life story told in six different but connected narrative threads. "Sex History" describes every sexual encounter dating back to kindergarten, with details that would make a therapist blush. "Black History" is an unflinchingly honest meditation on his own racism. Autobiography, particularly of the self-lacerating variety, has been a staple of alternative comics since such groundbreaking 1970s and ’80s works as Harvey Pekar’s American Splendor and Art Spiegelman’s Maus. Heatley presents his life thematically. He opens with his entire “Sex History,” from prekindergarten explorations to postmarital attempts to kick his addiction to masturbation and including vividly disquieting pages from a dream journal. Subsequent sections depict a life’s worth of encounters with African Americans and relations with Mom, Dad, and other kin. From it all, we acquire a comprehensive portrait, from mildly troubled youth and conflicted sexuality to recent religious conversion and fatherhood. Like Chris Ware, Heatley uses postage-stamp-sized panels to cram a massive amount of narrative onto each page. But his naive, slapdash drawings couldn’t be farther from Ware’s neurotically meticulous style; their lack of sophistication implies an unshielded honesty. Although more conventional prose memoirs may be the ones ensconced on best-seller lists, it’s hard to imagine Heatley’s story being told as effectively in any other medium than comics. --Gordon Flagg

About the Author
David Heatley played the Baby Jesus at a Christmas pageant in 1974, months after he was born. A few years later, his family moved to Teaneck, NJ, where they became disenchanted with Catholicism
and joined an Episcopal church which might have had the worse liturgical music in the country. Heatley was confirmed at the age of 13 and stopped going to church the following year. After a decade-and-a-half of self-destructive behavior, he had a spiritual awakening while visiting California in 2001—about which, more later. Heatley now lives in Jackson Heights, NY, with his wife Rebecca Gopoian (an agnostic, Jewish-Armenian poet), and their two awesome children. This is his first book. Go easy on him.

(he loses friendships because they don't like the way they are portrayed, and seemed amazed that people would consider him bisexual, after he depicts himself having sexual encounters with both genders!) I actually liked some of the stories and found the author sympathetic, but the artwork is extremely primitive, the panels cluttered (some to the point of being illegible) and it's hard to tell the characters apart. The editing is off - his wife had two babies within three months of each other!
Another reviewer said this book us one you will clutch to your heart or throw out - I wanted to embrace it, but the bad art was a serious turn off. People will think I'm intolerant and like the critics who lambasted the Impressionists, too stupid to understand great art - whatever. I fall into the group who throws this book out.

It's about "the tough questions"

This graphic autobiography is a collection of David Heatley's comics that are darkly and explicitly funny. He leaves very little to the imagination as he takes us through his sex life (and eventually his love life), his relationships, good and bad, with people of other races, and his relationship with his parents and family.

As an autobiography, the book gives us rare insight into the feelings and experience of another human being. It doesn't hold anything back, and doesn't let us as readers, either. You might put the book down in disgust after the first couple of pages, or read in mesmerized fascination as David alternately destroys and rebuilds his life. In neither case, will you be entirely comfortable. That is good. What David does brilliantly here is hold up the weakness and frailty of the human condition, then show us that it is possible to overcome it to be something more than what we were.

The book is graphic in more than one sense. It is as much about the drawings as the text. They are simple but effective, but in many cases the subject matter is very sexually graphic-about what you would expect in a book in which one section is titled "Sex." He draws his characters as real human beings with or without their clothes. This is one comic book that you don't leave out for the children to see.

As I read through My Brain Is Hanging Upside Down, a theme emerged of needing to ask ourselves the tough questions. What is sex? What is love? Why are they different? Am I a racist? Do I really know my Mom or Dad, or even myself?

For those with an open mind, this book will help you ask these questions of yourself.

A Sociocultural Biography for the open-minded in search of adult comic relief !

Presented in adult comic form, with all illustrations, speech quotes and accompanying commentary provided by the artist/author, this volume brings together a series of `strips' of biographical vignettes and very personal reflections of a `life so far experienced'. Accessible to anyone interested to explore a first-person view of American urban youth culture (and its discontents) of the 1980s and 1990s, and even if not enjoying the rather black humour, this work certainly supplies many document factoids and opinions for the modern comparative cultural anthropologist. For those with psychoanalytic leanings, this comic strip collection will perhaps offer casebook evidence of a personal (hang-up) diary undergoing Freudian catharsis, as a middle-aged artist portrays himself as a younger man.

Divided into 5 sections, the first two were of most interest to the current reviewer (the latter 3 concerned with parents were much less entertaining, and certainly less funny, than the likes of `The Modern Parents' of the British monthly adult comic `Viz'. Blatantly honest in reportage (including sexually explicit illustrations, tho' slightly censored in places, and containing street language unacceptable to many), the first chapter is openly exhibitionist with regards the author/artist's sexual history covering the initial 30 yrs of his life. Different numbers of years are unequally represented over some 100 strips, with some covering as few as a single picture, others more than 10 strips of a page. Continuity is not ambiguous, however, and will be of much documentary interest to both the social and psychosexual historian of the era. The final 8 strips suggest a `coming to terms' with (instead of a `coming out' as some might have expected !), with the main character's finally claiming to enjoy a heterosexual relationship as a family man.

Of even more interest to some, and for the same reasons as expressed above, the second (and largest) `chapter' explores unusually candid, if quirky, snapshot viewpoints, as expressed by a white teenager (the artist/author) trying to live peaceably amongst African-American friendships through an era of racial tension and `troubled' neighbourhoods. Indeed, the issues explored here provide valuable first-person reflections concerning the tensions associated with both racial integration and isolationist perspectives, whilst also addressing early testimony (perhaps unwitting on the part of the author here), with regards gun-related school shooting incidents.

Also himself a rap/techno lyricist, sociocultural historians (and less the psychoanalysts this time ?), may find the addition of commentary with regards contemporary street and ethnic music to be of interest - though others may be completely lost to the significance of these frequent references (in the same way mention of the adult comic Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers, and Cheech & Chong lyrics will mean little to the current generation !). Indeed the very title of this book is taken from a pop-song of the current era as portrayed (The Ramones, 1985), which otherwise has little, if anything to say about the brain, apart from a single strip panel in `Dad' called `Machine', which shows a video-gaming machine-like set up which "can generate a map of how your brain stores information". Altogether, this book is a read not for other than the open-minded, in search of adult comic relief.
